Sound masking systems for creating an efficient work environment

Sound masking systems are a new step towards creating an efficient and comfortable working environment. Today, the most common type of office is “Open-office”, when there are no partitions in the office, and employees can move freely and communicate with each other. This has a positive effect on the atmosphere in the team and the exchange of information, and at the same time creates additional distractions, the main one of which is the speech of colleagues. It is very difficult to concentrate on work when you are surrounded by all sorts of conversations, and to which you have to be distracted without wanting to. The solution to this problem is the use of sound masking systems from Cambridge Sound Management.

The Samsung WEP 200 Bluetooth headset is a fashion product; its main difference from its competitors, which immediately catches the eye, is its miniature size. In general, this is not the first small headset, just remember similar devices from Bluespoon, but it has a number of features relating not only to itself, but also to the package included.

Design and Construction

The design of the headset is certainly interesting. At least because such small headsets are still new on the market, now they are fashionable, rather expensive solutions, but soon, perhaps, this size for a Bluetooth headset will become, if not a standard, then commonplace. The rest of the design of the device can be characterized by the phrase “there’s nothing to grab onto.” The case has the shape of a slightly “plump” block; contacts are visible on the back side; by the way, if you wear it frequently, you may need to clean them. The black color is certainly advantageous, especially in our market; the coating is varnished, reliable, and the paint is unlikely to start peeling off during use. It was not chosen by chance; upon closer examination, associations immediately appear with many Samsung phones, although, in principle, the design of the headset goes well with any black phone (take, for example, the Sony Ericsson W900, Nokia N80).

Both men and women liked the design of the headset; the focus group was small - four men and three women. Everyone noted the miniature size, good color (except for one girl who didn’t like the color), and spoke positively about the carrying case (discussed below). And, surprisingly, after an external examination, everyone had a question about wearing comfort and sound quality. Before we talk about this in more detail, I will raise a question asked by a girl who did not like the color: “Will the WEP200 be available in white?” Therefore, this device is perfect for both sexes, but a second, less brutal color is necessary to attract the attention of women. For example, it could be white. Well, one more detail was noticed while one of the girls was trying on the headset - WEP200 becomes completely invisible under long hair. How this affects the quality of speech transmission remains unclear, quite possibly not at all.

When it comes to wearing comfort, be sure to try this headset on before purchasing. As you can see in the photographs, the fastening here is implemented in a rather unusual way - there is no earhook, the earphone is simply inserted into the ear canal, and is secured using a small rubber seal. Alas, the headset simply did not suit me - I had to tilt my head to the right or left, shake it a little, and the device ended up on the floor. I wasn’t the only one who tried on the headset; other people (I’d really like to call them test subjects) didn’t have any particular problems, but it never became clear whether the “wearing comfort” they were talking about was thought out because of the attractive design ( things you like have no disadvantages, do they?) or is wearing WEP200 really not difficult and does not cause discomfort?

The headset is very light, you feel it on your ear only because you know about it (well, and, of course, you also feel the seal in the ear canal).

For some countries, the delivery package includes additional earphone tips; alas, they were not included with the test sample; perhaps, if used with another tip, the result would have been radically different (at least for me). It will be interesting to try using the Sony Ericsson HBH IV 835 headset; it uses an earphone familiar from the wired HPM-70 headset; in theory, it should be more convenient than the WEP200 solution.

The assembly of the device is good, there are no gaps, play, or squeaks when pressed.

Control

The control of the device is quite standard - on the front panel there is a multifunctional button (hang up/answer a call, enter pairing mode, redial the last number dialed, etc.), on one of the ends of the headset (it’s just hard to tell whether it’s top or bottom, right or left) – volume rocker key. In general, the keys are pressed quite easily and clearly, but those with large hands will have to get used to it for some time - miniaturization also has a downside. I wouldn't call my fingers that big, but it took me some time to get used to controlling the call volume. This fact cannot be called a problem; rather, it must be taken into account when purchasing. One more thing: at first it is not always possible to correctly calculate the force of pressing the multifunction button when answering an incoming call - the headset is pressed into the ear, and pain may occur (although, of course, this greatly depends on the size of the ear canal).

And lastly, regarding the controls, it will take quite a long time to press the multifunction key to put the device into pairing mode, so don’t be surprised. Be sure to ask the seller to demonstrate this trick.

Nutrition

In theory, we should start with the type and capacity of the battery used, but the beginning of this chapter will be different. The fact is that the Samsung kit includes a small case that vaguely resembles a toy chest (there are no fairy tales inside). In order to charge the device, you need to place the headset on the contacts in this case, close the lid, and then connect the charger to it. By the way, it has its own format, it’s not a “clichéd” miniUSB. When the headset is charging, the inside of the case is illuminated in red. As you understand, the headset cannot be used while charging.

What can I say? On the one hand, the manufacturer’s attempt to be original is visible - the Nokia BH300 (almost the same dimensions) has a connector for a charger “on the body”, and uses new “thin” chargers. Samsung engineers decided to go their own way. A purely subjective decision is interesting; it is impossible to evaluate it adequately until you turn on logical thinking. Well, logic dictates that while the BH300 is charging, you don’t have to disconnect it from the phone - when a call comes in, you just need to disconnect the charger, put the headset on your ear and start a conversation. The same thing, in principle, can be done with WEP200, but the process of removing it from the box will take an order of magnitude longer, and purely psychologically you don’t want to touch the headset while it’s in the case. On the other hand, the time it takes to fully charge the headset is not that long; if you charge it in the evening, you won’t experience any problems with the case. In addition, the additional functionality of the magic box - use as a transport case - makes it even more attractive. And guess who will especially like this thing (meaning gender characteristics)? Who will simply be thrilled by the very process of opening and closing the case and showing it to others?

The headset uses a Li Ion-Pol battery with a capacity of 70 mAh; the WEP200 can work for 4 hours in talk mode, 100 hours in standby mode, and charging time is about two hours.

Here, I probably need to say something about this. The headset is one of the few that uses the Bluetooth 2.0 profile. This is great, the seller can tell you this, but what does it do? Apparently, the main result of using this profile is reduced power consumption; we will talk about this in more detail in another article.

Phone connection, sound quality

The headset was tested with two phones: Nokia N80, Sony Ericsson W900. As mentioned above, to put the device into pairing mode you need to hold down the multifunction key for quite a long time, this is not very convenient. Otherwise, there were no problems with pairing, however, not only with pairing, but also with operation in general - voice dialing works adequately, as does switching between lines, accepting and hanging up a call.

The sound quality can be described as average, moving away from the phone more than three to four meters, you hear noises, crackling sounds, in normal mode (one meter or less) they are absent, however, the interlocutors complained that the voice was heard as if from a barrel, they asked to repeat said louder. You can hear your interlocutor well, there are no problems with this, the volume level is sufficient.

The headset is not equipped with a DSP processor, what this fact will mean for the user - there is no need to explain: it is best to talk in a quiet room, otherwise, if you are, for example, in a supermarket, your interlocutor will enjoy a wonderful addition to your conversation - the voices of people around , public address announcements, etc.

conclusions

Samsung WEP200 is a fashion headset with many “buts”. Beautiful, but the quality of speech transmission is noticeably poor. The headset comes with a nice case, but wouldn't it be easier to charge the headset the usual way? The mounting method is unusual, but is it convenient? The headset is small in size and weight, but does this add convenience?

As for competitors. The average retail price of WEP200 is about $100, at first it seems that it can and should be compared with other miniature “luxury” headsets – Jabra JX-10, Nokia BH-800. But this is not so, to understand, just look at the Nokia BH-300 model (average price - about 65 dollars) - practically WEP200 and BH-300 are similar, like brother and sister (in that order). The main differences of the 300th model are that you can change the headbands, several pieces of different colors are included in the set, charging is carried out in the usual way, the design of the device is more “feminine”. Most of the characteristics of these devices are the same. Apparently, both WEP200 and BH 300 are made on the basis of one “progenitor” headset (most likely from Jabra), which we have yet to return to in reviews of some devices.

Based on this, the consumer will pay an additional $35 when purchasing the WEP200 (let’s take the “base” price of the BH-300, which is quite considerable, I must say) for the case and black color “included.” It’s hard to call this a good purchase - for $100 you can buy a more functional and even more fashionable product (for example, the Jabra JX-10). And, nevertheless, the WEP200 will find its buyer, it is quite possible that the majority will be women - sellers can be recommended to immediately demonstrate the charging case, talk about the lightness and inconspicuousness of the device (the case at this time can be opened and closed, hidden and pulled out his headset).
