TestDisk - how to use. Your section is missing hard drive on Windows, this can happen for many reasons, a virus has entered your computer, the malfunction of a program or incorrect user actions, which happens more often. No need to panic, your files are safe and sound, only the partition information has been deleted hard drive, from the partition table. This table is something similar to links, the file seems to exist, but without a link to it, the system cannot see it, because its address is not known. The first thing to do in this case is not to try to do anything about it hard drive(format, or try to write something to it). If this happened to the system partition, that is, drive C, and the system does not start, then the hard drive must be removed, connected to another working computer and the following operations must be performed with it. In this case, partition E, located on the same hard drive as the system, disappeared. A powerful, absolutely free utility helped me with this. TestDisk. This program specially created for recover lost partitions on hard drives, to restore boot files due to incorrect actions of programs, humans and viruses (for example, the partition table has disappeared), as well as in case of failure of the storage medium. For now, TestDisk It is considered the best tool in its category, which has repeatedly helped to cope where paid tools from such monsters as Acronis, Runtime and others could not help. It is believed that using a utility like Acronis Recovery is more likely to harm and aggravate the problem than it helps you. And so, I present to you an overview of how I dealt with this problem. Download TestDisk from official website or, and unpack it, be sure to onto another hard drive, not the one on which we are going to restore the partition; if you have one hard drive, then this must be done on another computer.

I lost section E.

Let's launch program by double clicking on the icon

The program window opens

In the program we work with the keys, up, down, left, right.

Here select Create and press Enter

Here we select the problematic hard drive, it’s my first one, 20 GB in size and press Enter

Select the desired Partition Table type. Usually the correct value is already selected "by default" because TestDisk during analysis, it automatically determines the table type.

Press Enter to continue.

Select the "Analyse" menu item to check the partition structure of the current disk and search for "lost" partitions.

Press Enter to continue.

Press Y to continue.

TestDisk displays search results in real time.

TestDisk I found two partitions, including the lost logical one labeled L, at the bottom of the table we look at the partition size.

Select this section and press p to display the file list (To exit the file list display mode, press q).

All folders and files are displayed normally. (The utility does not understand the Russian language, so files with Russian names may not be displayed correctly)
Press Enter to continue.

TestDisk 7.0

TestDisk download for free from the official website

TestDisk– a powerful program that helps in data recovery. This software is easy to use both for beginners who recover accidentally deleted data, and for professionals to recover disks.

You can follow the link at the bottom of the page.

  • Program features:
  • repair and recovery of hard disk partitions;
  • restoring the FAT32 boot sector from a backup;
  • creating a boot sector in FAT12/FAT16/FAT32;
  • FAT table fix;
  • creating an NTFS boot sector or restoring from a backup;

fixing the MFT table using a mirror copy.

TestDisk will return lost disk partitions, restore partition tables, and fix boot problems. Repair or rebuild boot sectors and FAT tables, or restore a FAT32 boot sector from a backup - TestDisk does it with ease.

If a disk is accidentally formatted, this program restores 100% of the information (of course, if there was no overwriting to the disk). In addition, TestDisk can recover information from digital cameras and CDs. Popular image formats, audio-video, and office documents can be restored. TestDisk official website. Our website monitors all program updates so that you have the latest version of Recover TestDisk.

The reasons why your hard drive partition may suddenly disappear may be different, but whatever is the source of the problem, do not panic. More than likely, all your files remained safe and sound, only information about the hard drive partition was missing. This data is located in a special partition table in the first physical sectors of the disk and is something like a link pointing to a particular logical partition.

If such a link is damaged, the system simply will not know where the partition begins and ends on the hard disk. Fortunately, information about partitions can be restored, and with it the normal display of partitions with user data. The main thing is not to take any hasty actions with the disk, in the sense of not trying to format it, re-create partitions on it, etc., as this will cause irreparable damage to your files.

In this example, we will use the console utility to recover a lost partition TestDisk. This powerful software tool allows you to recover disk partitions and areas MFT , overwrite boot area MBR , check and correct errors in disk structures. In addition, TestDisk is considered more efficient and secure than even such popular well-promoted GUI analogues as Acronis .

If you have lost a partition with user data, you can work with the utility from Windows, but if the system partition is damaged and Windows cannot boot, the disk must be removed and connected to a working computer or use LiveCD, which contains TestDisk. So, let's imagine that our disk is missing D . Download the utility from the official website, unpack it, run the executable file testdisk_win.exe, select the option and press Enter.

The utility usually determines the partition type automatically; most likely in the next window you will have it selected Intel. We leave everything as is and press enter.

To analyze the partition structure of the disk, select and press enter again.

Make sure the option is highlighted at the bottom of the utility window and press Enter.

TestDisk will scan and if it detects a deleted partition on the disk, it will show it.

To make sure you are dealing with the correct partition, press the P key (English) and view the list of files available in the section.

To exit playback mode, press Q. Now let's restore the lost partition. Press Enter (section should be highlighted in green) , use the arrow keys to set the mode Write and enter again.

Greetings dear readers!

Just recently I posted an article about a data recovery program. But unfortunately, I didn’t think about the fact that not all users will be able to handle it... Today I want to fix this problem. Some users asked me to make a video review, but since I’m currently on vacation :)) And therefore I don’t have the necessary material, that is: there is no Windows installed and no damaged removable media. So I decided to make a simple selection of screenshots describing all the actions!

All screenshots will be taken from the Linux operating system. But in Windows all functions will be the same.

1. This window prompts us to make a Log file of the entire work. But I think that in this situation it does not make sense, although you may think otherwise, so we select the desired option and confirm the choice. Click Enter

2. The required media appears, select the desired one and confirm by pressing Proceed.

3. Next we are asked to select the type of partition table; in most cases this is the type Intel/PC Partition.

4. A menu appears with the choice of operation. To begin, select the item Analyze to perform disk analysis.

5.In section Analyze Choose Quick Search.

6. We confirm once again and see that an analysis is being carried out.

7. After the analysis is completed, you can begin data recovery. At the moment we are interested in 2 actions.

  • Get the list of files we are interested in by clicking P
  • Try loading a backup copy of the partition table by pressing L This will take you back to the original state of the device before it broke down.

We will display a list of files by clicking R

From here you can try to copy especially important files and folders, especially if you are afraid that the data will not be restored, but on the contrary, you will lose the latest information, even if it is broken. Select the required information and press WITH to copy it. Select the folder where these files will be saved; in Windows, these files are saved in the same folder where the program itself is located .

8. In your opinion, we have retained particularly important information. Now we will restore the disk to its original form, that is, until it broke. To do this, press the key Q Let's go back to point 7.

Let's try to return the media to its previous state. Click L. In the window that appears, select Load

And at the request of the program, we confirm our choice with a click Y

We are waiting for the restoration process to come to an end. I then rejoice that all our data has been recovered and the media is working as before.
I wish everyone successful recovery of lost data, and even better, that this does not happen to anyone! Because I, like no one else, know what it’s like to lose very important data that you’ve been working on for weeks, or even months.

Once again I would like to apologize to the readers for what I did not foresee. And for the fact that at the moment I only posted screenshots.

If anyone has any questions, then write to me at [email protected]

Recently, a logical partition of my hard drive suddenly disappeared on my computer, and then I thought that the data could no longer be recovered, but there was still hope, so I started looking for a solution to recover the disappeared hard drive volume.
And then I came across this very multifunctional utility TestDisk with the help of which I managed to recover the missing hard drive partition, therefore I express my gratitude to the developer of this utility.
Firstly TestDisk the program is distributed as open source and licensed under the GNU General Public License, so you won’t have to pay for use; I should note that the utility is not inferior to similar paid analogues.
TestDisk is a powerful free program to recover lost data. It was developed primarily to help recover lost partitions and/or restore disk boot capacity if this problem is caused by software, viruses or human errors (such as accidentally deleting the Partition Table). It is very easy to restore Partition Tables with TestDisk.

TestDisk Maybe:

  • Correct the partition table, restore deleted partitions;
  • Restore FAT32 boot sector from backup;
  • Rebuild (reconstruct) the FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector;
  • Correct FAT table;
  • Rebuild (reconstruct) the NTFS boot sector;
  • Restore NTFS boot sector from backup;
  • To restore MFT using MFT mirror;
  • Define backup SuperBlock ext2/ext3/ext4;
  • Recover deleted files on FAT, NTFS and ext2 file systems;
  • Copy files from remote FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 partitions.
TestDisk Suitable for both beginners and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about non-booting drives which can then be used for further analysis. Those already familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool when performing recovery.
Another very important thing is that the utility works under many operating systems:
  • DOS ( real or in Windows 9x, DOS-box);
  • Windows (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista);
  • Linux;
  • FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD;
  • SunOS;
  • MacOS.
which makes it simply irreplaceable.

TestDisk can find and reconstruct lost partitions for multiple file systems:

  • BeFS (BeOS)
  • BSD disklabel (FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD)
  • CramFS, Compressed File System (compressed file system)
  • DOS/Windows FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32
  • Windows exFAT
  • HFS, HFS+ and HFSX, Hierarchical File System (hierarchical file system)
  • JFS, IBM's Journaled File System (IBM Journaled File System)
  • Linux ext2, ext3 and ext4
  • Linux LUKS encrypted partition (encrypted Linux partition)
  • Linux RAID md 0.9/1.0/1.1/1.2
    • RAID 1: mirroring
    • RAID 4: striped array with parity device
    • RAID 5: striped array with distributed parity information
    • RAID 6: striped array with distributed dual redundancy information
  • Linux Swap (versions 1 and 2)
  • LVM and LVM2, Linux Logical Volume Manager
  • Mac partition map
  • Novell Storage Services NSS
  • NTFS (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008)
  • ReiserFS 3.5, 3.6 and 4
  • Sun Solaris i386 disklabel
  • Unix File System UFS and UFS2 (Sun/BSD/...)
  • XFS, SGI's Journaled File System
TestDisk specializes in data recovery from damaged hard drives. (with bad blocks (bad sectors)), data recovery from removable media (Floppy/CD/DVD/USB), recovery of hard drive partition tables.

So let's look at an example of recovering a lost hard drive partition.
Launch TestDisk it is possible both in the operating system itself Windows so with under
DOS from a USB drive or LiveUSB if the partition on which the operating system was installed crashed.
For example, let's take the recovery of an accidentally deleted NTFS logical partition.
Recovering a FAT32 partition (instead of the NTFS partition shown in this guide) can be achieved by following the same steps.

You need to run the program with “administrator” privileges/rights, if we are working with an OS, to do this you need to right-click on testdisk_win.exe, having previously unpacked it from the archive onto your computer.

A program window will appear, the program interface is in English, but pretty much everything is done by pressing a few keys:

  • To go to TestDisk, use the arrow keys Up down And PageUp/PageDown .
  • To continue, confirm your choice by pressing the key Enter .
  • To return to the previous display or exit TestDisk, use the key Q (exit ).
  • To save changes made while running TestDisk, you must confirm them with the key Y (yes) and/or Enter
  • To write data to the MBR partition, you need to select "Write" by selecting from the keyboard and press the key Enter .
And so the first request in the program window asks whether to create a report about the program’s robot or not, for this we will focus on the point Create(create report) and click Enter(Continue).

Next, you are given the choice of a hard drive, as there may be several of them, plus removable media.

Use the arrows to select our hard drive and click Enter.

TestDisk will display Partition Table types.

Select the desired type of Partition Table. Usually the correct value is already selected by default, since TestDisk automatically determines the table type during analysis.
Press Enter to continue.

TestDisk displays the following menu Partition Table Status

Select the "Analyse" menu item to check the partition structure of the current disk and search for "lost" partitions.
Press Enter again to continue the procedure.

Next, the current partition structure will be displayed. Examine it for missing sections or errors.
Here we can already see if we found lost hard drive partitions
Choose Quick Search (Quick Search) and press Enter to continue.
Next, the program issues a request Should TestDisk search for partition created under Vista? (Search for partitions created under Vista OS?).

Be sure to click Y (YES) if we are restoring data from Windows Vista & Seven, and if you just click yes, nothing bad will happen.

TestDisk should find hard disk partitions, including lost ones.

To view what is on each section, select the section and press the key P to view a list of files.
All folders and files should appear normally. (The utility does not understand the Russian language, so files with Russian names will not be displayed correctly), to copy files to another disk, press the button WITH(copy), but before that you need to specify the path to save the files.

To exit, press the key Q, also to view data about the disk, its size and file system are indicated at the very bottom.
Click Enter(Enter) to continue.
The following window will appear:

For a more thorough search, click Deep Search this is if a quick search did not find the lost partitions, to write the disk table structure data to the MBR partition, select Write and click Enter(if TestDisk correctly identified the partitions), after which our OS should boot with all the logical partitions of the hard drive.

If you have any comments or additions, I will be happy to hear from you.

If you notice an error, select a piece of text and press Ctrl+Enter
