In this tutorial we will create a VHS video tape effect in Adobe Photoshop. We will work with filters, layer styles, adjustment layers. The result will be an interesting retro effect. At the same time, we use non-destructive correction methods. To do this, from the very beginning we convert the image we will be working on into a smart object. This means that after completing the tutorial, you can replace this image with any other one, and not create the entire effect again.

Sources

To complete the lesson you will need the following sources:

  • Font VCR-OSD-Mono
  • VHS texture

1. Prepare the document

Step 1

Click Control-N to create a new document. Specify the parameters as shown below.

Step 2

From the menu, select File > Place/File>Place and select the photo you will work on. You can take a photo from the source, or you can use your own.

Step 3

Right-click on the photo layer and select Convert to Smart Object.

2. Create a retro effect

Step 1

Make the smart object layer active and select from the menu Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur/Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. Specify the blur radius in 3 px.

Step 2

Create two copies for the photo layer. To do this, right-click on the layer and select Duplicate.

Step 3

Double-click on the first (top) photo layer to open the Layer Styles window. In the tab Blending Options uncheck color channels Green And Blue. After that, do the same operation with the second layer with the photo, but this time uncheck the Red/Red And Green.

Step 4

Move the top photo layer to 20px to the left, and the second layer is on 20px more to the right.

Step 5

Now let's do color correction. From the menu, select Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation/Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation and configure the settings as shown below.

Step 6

Select from menu Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Exposure/Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Exposure:

Step 7

Now let's add textures. Place the original texture on top of all layers. Specify the texture layer Blending Mode - Screen/Lightening.

This is what should happen at this stage:

3. Add design

Step 1

Take the tool Rectangle/Rectangle. Create a shape with the parameters as shown below.

Step 2

Create another rectangle of different sizes. And place the second rectangle perpendicular to the first one as shown below.

Step 3

While holding down the key Shift, select both layers with rectangles, right-click on them and select Merge Shapes/Merge Shapes. Then create three copies of the resulting layer.

Step 4

Rotate each layer while holding Shift, to create a frame.

Step 5

Now we need another smaller frame. We create it using the same principle, but the rectangles will be smaller:

Step 6

Add a cross inside the small frame:

Step 7

Add a red circle - a recording symbol. Draw it using the tool Ellipse/Ellipse.

Step 8

Next to him is a tool Type/Text and in the font from the source code enter the word REC.

Step 9

At the bottom we add the word TIME.

Step 10

And finally the time in the upper right corner.

Translation – Duty room

In this tutorial you will learn how to create an animated template with a clutter effect in Photoshop. The special thing about this template is that you just need to replace the photo to get a new result.

In the same way, I created the Retrowave 8 Bit animation template, which is available in my portfolio on GraphicRiver.

Any photo will be suitable for this lesson. You can find free photos on Unsplash and Pixabay, or you can buy a high-quality photo on PhotoDune. I will use this photo.

1. Document preparation

Step 1

Press Ctrl+N to create a new document 500 x 500 pixels, 300 pixels/inch.

Step 2

Let's move on File - Place(File - Place) and insert the photo onto the working document.

Step 3

Adjust the photo size to fit the document size and press Enter.

Step 4

Right-click on the photo layer and select Rasterize Layer(Rasterize layer).

Step 5

Press the M key to activate Rectangular Marquee Tool(Rectangular selection), and select the entire working canvas.

Step 6

Step 9

Right-click on this layer and select Convert to Smart Object(Convert to Smart Object).

2. Add frames and animation elements

Step 1

Now we need to create frames for our future animation. Duplicate the “Base” layer seven times. Right-click on it and select Duplicate Layer(Copy layer) or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J.

Step 2

We call each copy “Frame 1”, “Frame 2” and so on up to seven.

Step 3

Hide all layers by clicking on the eye icon in the layers panel, except for the “Frame 2” layer.

Step 4

Select the second frame, press Ctrl+T and click on the icon on the top panel Warp(Deformation).

Step 5

We move the antennae of the grid to stretch the picture.

Step 6

Turn on the visibility of the next frame and apply again Warp(Warp) to change the shape of the photo.

Step 7

We continue to deform the next frame using Warp(Deformation).

Step 8

Select the next frame and press Ctrl+T, then go Edit - Transform - Distort(Editing - Transformation - Distortion).

Step 9

Hold Shift and move the upper right corner by -2 degrees, and the lower right corner by 2, then press Enter.

Step 10

Double-click on the same layer and in the window that appears Layer Style(Layer style) uncheck the channels Blue(Blue) and Green(Green).

Step 11

Select the next layer. Activating the transformation Distort(Distort) and move the top left corner 2 degrees and the bottom right 2 degrees to the left, then press Enter.

Step 12

Double-click on this layer and uncheck the channels Red(Red) and Blue(Blue).

Step 13

Select the last layer and set its blending mode to Hard Mix(Hard mixing).

Step 14

Now we need to create a texture with noise. Press the U key and draw a rectangle measuring 500 x 4 pixels.

Step 15

Move the rectangle to the very top of the document.

Step 16

Duplicate (Ctrl+J) it and lower the copy 8 pixels lower, while holding down the Shift key.

Step 17

We continue to copy the rectangle until we fill the entire document with lines.

Step 18

With the Shift key held down, select all the layers with the line, then in the layers panel right-click on them and select Rasterize Layer(Rasterize layer).

Step 19

After that, right-click on them again and select Merge Layers(Merge layers).

Step 20

Duplicate (Ctrl+J) the resulting layer and, holding down the Shift key, move it up 504 pixels.

Step 21

Merge both copies together (Ctrl+E) and name the resulting layer “TV texture”.

Step 22

Reduce the layer opacity to 15% and set the blending mode to Overlay(Overlap).

Step 23

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and name it “Frame”. Fill the layer with black and set Fill(Fill) to 0%.

Step 24

Double click on this layer and apply a layer style Stroke(Stroke). We use the following parameters:

  • Size(Size): 25 px;
  • Position(Position): Inside(Inside);
  • Color(Color): black.

Step 25

Now we need to rasterize the layer style. Right-click on the layer and select Rasterize Layer Style(Rasterize layer style).

Step 26

Let's move on Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur(Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur) and set Radius(Radius) by 4 pixels.

Step 27

Adjust the frame size using Ctrl+T while holding down the Shift key.

3. Create animation

Step 1

Now we are all ready to create the animation. Let's move on Window - Timeline(Window - Timeline) and click on the button Create Video Timeline(Create a timeline for the video).

Step 2

Turn on the visibility of the first and second frames, then select the second frame in the layers panel.

Step 3

Reduce the opacity of the “Frame 2” layer to 0%.

Step 4

On the timeline, expand the second frame by clicking on the arrow on the timeline, and move the time indicator to the position 0:00:00:05.

Step 5

Now we need to create the first key frame. Near Opacity(Opacity) click on the timer icon. As a result, a yellow diamond will appear on the scale - this is our first key frame of the animation.

Step 6

Move the time indicator to 0:00:00:13 and increase the layer opacity to 100%. After changing the opacity, a keyframe will be added automatically.

Step 7

After that, move the indicator to 0:00:00:20 and set the layer opacity to 0%.

Step 8

Select the next layer “Frame 3” and reduce its opacity to 0%. Then we create keyframes with different opacity levels, as we did above: 0:00:00:13, 0:00:00:20 and 0:00:00:26.

Step 9

On the timeline, select all three key frames, right-click on them and select Copy(Copy).

Step 10

Move the time indicator to position 0:00:01:00, create a new key frame, right-click on it and select Paste(Insert).

Step 11

After that, move the indicator to 00:00:02:00 and paste the copied keyframes again. Move the first of the copied keyframes to position 0:00:01:24, and the last one to 0:00:02:20. This will allow us to make the effect more interesting.

Step 12

Now we need to move the indicator to 0:00:03:10 and insert the keyframes again. After this, move the first of the copied frames to 0:00:03:13, and the last one to 0:00:03:21.

Step 13

Now let's animate the next layer. Select the “Frame 4” layer and reduce its opacity to 0%. Then we add three keyframes, alternating opacity as we did above: 0:00:00:13, 0:00:00:18 and 0:00:00:22. Then we copy these frames and paste them side by side so that the central one is at position 0:00:01:03.

Step 14

We add three more new frames: 0:00:03:00, 0:00:03:05 and 0:00:03:20.

Step 15

Copy the three frames created in step 14 and move them to position 0:00:04:00.

Step 16

In the layers panel, select the next layer and reduce its opacity to 0%. After that, add three keyframes at positions 0:00:00:10, 0:00:00:15 and 0:00:00:20. Don't forget to alternate layer opacity.

Then we copy these three frames twice and move each copy so that the central keyframe of the first copy is at the position 0:00:01:00, and the second copy is at 0:00:01:15.

Step 17

Add three new keyframes at positions 0:00:02:15, 0:00:02:20 and 0:00:03:20.

Do you like the grungy look of static on old VHS tapes? There are many ways to recreate these effects on images, and you can even recreate animation from a static image using the Animated VHS Creation Kit tool.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to recreate the VHS noise effect in your images using only standard Photoshop tools.

Translator's note: 1. VHS is an analog video recording format; this format was used when recording videotapes 2.AnimatedVHSCreationKit - a tool that recreates the effectVHS on the original image and can also recreate the animation effectVHS.

Final result:

1. Create a New Document

Step 1

Create a new working document (Ctrl+N) with the following dimensions: 1500 x 1000 px; resolution 300 dpi.

Step 2

Note: you can download the image from the link at the beginning of the lesson or use any source image of your choice.

Step 3

Apply scaling to the image to the size of the working document, and then press the ‘Enter’ key.

Step 4

Press the 'T' key to add text to the top right corner of the image.

Step 5

Polygon(Polygon Tool), in the control panel of this tool, set the number of sides: 3 to draw a triangle shape. Place the triangle shape as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 6

Hold down the 'Shift' key, select all layers in the layers palette, and then right-click on the selected layers and select the option from the menu that appears Merge Layers(Merge Layers).

Step 7

Now, right-click on the merged layer and select the option from the menu that appears Convert to Smart Object(Convert to Smart Object).

Step 8

Create four duplicate layers by right-clicking on the layer with the smart object and selecting the option from the menu that appears Duplicate Layer(Duplicate).

2. Create Effects

Step 1

Turn off the visibility of all layers except the first two. Next, double-click on the second layer and in the window that appears, uncheck the boxes Green(Green) and Blue(Blue) channels.

Translator's note: creating 4 duplicate layers, then the author turned off the visibility of the top three layers.

Step 2

Press the 'V' key while holding the 'Shift' key and move the second layer 30 px to the right.

Step 3

Turn on the visibility of the third layer, in the same way as in the previous step, turn off the channels Red(Red) and Green(Green). Next, hold down the 'Shift' key and move this layer 20 px to the left.

Step 4

Turn on the visibility of the fourth layer, and then go Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation(Layer > New Adjustments Layer > Hue/Saturation).

Step 5

Double-click the adjustment layer to change the value Saturation(Saturation) up to +100.

As you can see, the saturation effect has been applied to the entire image, but we only need to apply saturation to some areas of the image.

Step 6

Hue/Saturation Create Clipping Mask(Create Clipping Mask), this way the adjustment layer's adjustment will only apply to the bottom layer.

Step 7

Now add a layer mask to the fourth layer.

Step 8

Hold down the Alt key and click on the layer mask thumbnail to open it. Fill the mask with black.

Step 9

Press the 'M' key and then create rectangular selections where you would like the effect to be applied. Fill the created rectangles with white.

Thus, we applied the saturation effect only to certain areas of the image:

Step 10

Add a layer mask to the fifth layer, fill the mask with black. Next, create a large white rectangle just above the center of the image.

Step 11

Hold down the 'Shift' key and move this layer 600 px down.

Translator's note: first deselect the active selection (Ctrl+D), and then don’t forget to go from the mask to the layer by clicking on the layer thumbnail. Move the image strip all the way down, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 12

Let's go Filter - Blur - Motion Blur(Filter > Blur > Motion Blur). Set the following settings: Corner(Angle): 15°; Bias(Distance): 15.

Step 13

Let's add a little distortion to the image. Let's go Filter - Distort - Twist(Filter > Distortion > Twirl). Set the following settings: Corner(Angle): 50°.

Step 14

Right click on the adjustment layer Hue/Saturation(Hue/Saturation) and in the window that appears, select the option Duplicate Layer(Duplicate). Next, move the duplicate adjustment layer to the top, placing it on top of the fifth layer, and then convert the duplicate adjustment layer into a clipping mask.

The result after all the manipulations should be as in the screenshot below:

3. Create a VHS Texture

Step 1

Create a new layer (Shift+Control+N) and fill it with white.

Step 2

Next, let's go Filter - Filter Gallery - Sketch(Filter > Filter Gallery > Sketch). Select sketch type Halftonepattern(Halftone Pattern). Set the following settings: Size(Size): 2; Contrast(Contrast): 2.

Step 3

Blend options Overlap(Overlay); Opacity(Opacity): 25%. Disable channels Red(Red) and Blue(Blue).

Translator's note: the author created a texture from small thin lines.

Step 4

Duplicate the texture. Using Free Transform (Ctrl+T), hold down the 'Shift' key, rotate the duplicate texture layer by 90°, and also apply scaling to the size of the working document.

Translator's note: Thus, the author created a texture from small cells.

Step 5

Double click on the layer to apply the following settings in the window Blend options(Blending Mode): blending mode Normal(Normal); Opacity(Opacity): 15%. Disable channels Green(Green) and Blue(Blue).

Translator's note: perform actions on the duplicate texture layer.

Step 6

Press 'U' key, select tool Rectangle(Rectangle Tool). Create a shape with the following dimensions: Width(Width): 1800 px; Height(Height): 120 px.

Step 7

Click on the rectangle layer and select the option from the menu that appears Rasterize layer(Rasterize Layer).

Step 8

Next, let's go Filter - Noise - Add Noise(Filter > Noise > Effect(Amount): 400%; Distribution(Distribution): Uniform Monochrome(Monochromatic).

Step 9

Step 10

Let's go Image - Correction - Brightness / Contrast(Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast). Set the following settings: Brightness(Brightness): 150; Contrast(Contrast): 100.

Step 11

While on the rectangle layer, press Ctrl+I to invert the colors of the noise texture, and then change the blending mode to Lightening the base(Color Dodge).

Step 12

Duplicate the noise stripe layer several times. Hold down the 'Shift' key and move the duplicate layers, placing them in different places in the image.

Step 13

Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N), fill this layer with black.

Step 14

Let's go Filter - Noise - Add Noise(Filter > Noise > Add Noise). Set the following settings: Effect(Amount): 400%; Distribution(Distribution): Uniform(Uniform); Check the box Monochrome(Monochromatic).

Step 15

Now we will add the Color Tile effect, for this we go Filter - Filter Gallery - Color Tile(Filter > Filter Gallery > Patchwork). Set the following settings for this filter: Square size(Square Size): 0; Relief(Relief): 0.

Translator's note: to apply the filter, go Filter - Filter Gallery - Texture - Colored Tile(Filter >FilterGallery >Texture >patchwork).

Step 16

Let's go Image - Correction - Threshold(Image > Adjustments > Threshold). Install Brightness threshold(Threshold Level) 240.

Step 17

Double click on the layer to apply the following settings in the window Blend options(Blending Mode): blending mode Lightening(Screen); Opacity(Opacity): 100%. Disable channels Red(Red) and Blue(Blue).

Step 18

Now we need to duplicate the layer. For a duplicate layer, turn on channels Red(Red) and Blue(Blue) and also turn off the channel Green(Green).

Step 19

Hold down the 'Shift' key and move this new layer 60 px to the right.

Now open the “Timeline” panel, it is located on the “Window” tab of the main menu (Window --> TimeLine) and click on the arrow next to the central button, select “Create Frame Animation” from the drop-down list, click on this button:

Selecting the frame animation mode.

In the layers panel, go to the bottommost layer and turn off the visibility of all layers except the bottom one. The first frame of the animation is automatically created in the timeline, showing the bottom layer of the Layers panel. Click on the frame display time to change it to 0.04 seconds, as shown in the figure. Our two usable panels and document should currently look like this:

View of the document, layers panel and animation panel. The first frame of the animation has been created.

Click on the button to create a new animation frame (1), then turn on the visibility of the second layer from the bottom (2), but not vice versa!!! :

Creating the second animation frame.

In the same way, create the remaining animation frames, according to the number of layers in the layers panel.

At the bottom left of the timeline, switch the playback mode to “Continuously”, then click the “Start animation playback” button. If you did everything correctly, the animation should start:

Pre-animation of noise. For clarity, I made the frame display time in this figure 0.09 seconds, not 0.04.

Actually, the animation is ready. Now you need to adjust the tone of the noise to your liking. We will do this using adjustment layers.

Select all the layers in the layers panel (Ctrl+Alt+A) and group them (Ctrl+G).

Attention! Any additions of adjustment layers, as well as changes from the settings, can only be made when first frame on the timeline!

Add a Solid Color adjustment layer to the group, set the color to pure white, and change the blending mode to Difference. Thus, we inverted the black and white pixels, as a result the noise became darker in the overall picture. Pay attention to the timeline, all the animation frames have changed:

Invert animation colors using an adjustment layer.

Darken the animation using an adjustment layer.

With this we have completely changed the pure white pixels, making them a medium gray color.

All that remains is to save the animation. You can press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S and save it as a GIF animation (saving as a GIF is shown in more detail in the video tutorial), or you can create an MP4 video by importing the video.

If you notice an error, select a piece of text and press Ctrl+Enter
