After the release of any official firmware, most users install new versions of them in order to ensure better performance of the device, although this is not at all necessary. If you still decide to improve your operating system, in this article we will tell you how to do it correctly. The update of Xiaomi Mi5 and some other devices will be partially taken into account. We will also talk about installing a new version software produced by air.

What is OTA

To be precise, in simple, understandable language, OTA (Over The Air) updates do not require a connection to a computer, that is, you can update via 3G Internet, EDGE or Wi-Fi, this method is often called “over-the-air update”. Having a user account, we will be able to synchronize our device only with new firmware modules, this function also allows you to receive notifications about released products regarding the OS, your data is not lost, but remains saved, in short, this method saves you a lot of time and effort. Absolutely every Xiaomi owner will be able to cope with updating the system to the new version, and we will talk about device compatibility in the future.

Current firmware on this moment is an update to MIUI 8, so in the future we will talk specifically about it. We will tell you who can afford to upgrade to the current MIUI 8 build, and also advise what to do if you still have not received the firmware for your device. We will not talk about its pros and cons, we will only say that such an innovation will change appearance interface, will add a multi-screen mode that allows you to work with a number of special programs, in general, your Android will transform well, and there will be something to look at.

Compatibility

It is also important which devices can be installed on new firmware, so it is important to understand this issue. According to official sources, the firmware will be available on all Android 6.0 devices, including devices such as Xiaomi Mi4, its earlier representatives of the Mi series, that is, Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 3 and so on. Updating the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro, and indeed the entire Redmi line along with Mi Note, is a given.

True, there is one thing. The fact is that the firmware is not yet available to everyone, since it is released in “waves” for certain series of devices, but if you have all the necessary files, you can install it manually, which we will briefly discuss later.

Firmware update

Updating the firmware is not the easiest process, at least it used to be. Now, with the help of OTA, you can do everything in a few clicks, and you don’t need a computer, a connection cable, and you will also be able to do without searching for the necessary files, their correct location, and so on. Since you already know about over-the-air updating, let’s move on directly to the process, looking at three simple steps:

  • Make sure that your device is charged to the maximum, but even 30% of the battery is enough to carry out such an operation; for some, 60%. But it’s better not to risk it after all full charge devices;
  • Of course, up to Android 6 and older you need official firmware, that is, custom and root rights are not suitable here, and there should not be any changes in the firmware;
  • Then you just have to follow the standard path to check for updates: “Menu” – “Settings” – “About phone” – “System updates” – “Check now”. When the system sees that there is an update, agree to install it, restart the device, and then wait.

Having figured out how to update your Xiaomi devices Redmi 3 Pro and some others, I would like to mention that for the same Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, Xiaomi Redmi 3S at the time of writing there is only a Chinese version of the firmware and there is nothing you can do about it, so you will have to wait. We remind you that MIUI firmware latest version are not released immediately and not for all devices. They will still be translated (global version), so there is no rush, of course, unless you want to get a device in Chinese.

Other installation options

Since many people want to upgrade their device to MIUI now, there are options manual installation via Recovery and Fastboot, but this is a topic for another article. It is also worth considering that the approximate similarity of devices, say Redmi 3 and 3 S, does not promise us that they will be able to officially update at the same time, although everyone really hopes for this.

If for some reason you are unable to update your device, you should try slightly more difficult methods, but no less correct; more about this in the article about device firmware.

For correct operation of each gadget, you need current firmware. The phone receives updates that provide normal work already the firmware itself. But it is important that it is installed official version firmware, which preserves the warranty on the phone, ensures the absence of various glitches in the system, etc.

This does not mean that the smartphone should be in stasis and not change after purchase. The user regularly installs the applications he needs, and new applications rarely want to run on older versions of the software. That is why users have a logical question: how to update their smartphone to ensure its uninterrupted and high-quality operation?

For example, consider Xiaomi gadgets. These devices are in great demand in the domestic market despite the fact that they are called something like an iPhone for the poor. But in terms of characteristics, gadgets are not much inferior to iPhones, of course, if we talk about flagships, so we see no point in paying more just for a well-promoted brand and unnecessary show-offs. The main thing is that the smartphone works, and to do this, you need to update it regularly.

At the moment, the current firmware for Xiaomi is MIUI 9. If you don't have this shell yet, you need to switch to it. But there is a peculiarity, since the company releases updates in waves, gradually for each series. Now there is already an update for Mi series gadgets. In particular, the new firmware is intended for: Mi6, Mi5S Plus, Mi5S, Mi5C, Mi5, Mi4S, Mi4C, Mi4, Mi3, Mi2/2S, Mi Mix, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi Note 2, Mi Note/Pro, Mi Pad 2, Mi Pad 1, Redmi Note 4X, Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note, Redmi Pro, Redmi 4X, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4, Redmi 4 Prime, Redmi 3S/Prime, Redmi 3 , Redmi 2A, Redmi 2/Prime, Redmi 1S, Redmi 1.

The update in question allows you to make your smartphone better, more modern and more reliable:

  • The update allows you to change the appearance of the interface;
  • Thanks to the new version of MIUI, you can add a multi-screen mode for a more comfortable experience;
  • Simultaneously monitor the operation of several programs, and more.

Summarizing all of the above, your Android is noticeably transformed for the better. But before installing the firmware, check its compatibility with your smartphone. At the moment, the MIUI 9 shell is available for all devices running Android 7.0.

Why update Xiaomi Mi via OTA

Smart smartphones, if necessary, can be updated without the help of their owner thanks to OTA (Over The Air) technology. This is an update that does not need to be connected to your computer. The only thing you need to provide for it is the Internet, working via 3G, EDGE or Wi-Fi.

Surely you have heard of this method: "over the air update". This is what is meant by updating via OTA. All you need for this method of receiving updates:

  • Get a user account;
  • Synchronize your smartphone with new firmware modules.

In principle, this is all you need to ensure uninterrupted receipt of updates, receive messages that new updates have appeared for your Xiaomi smartphone, and install them immediately.

What is very useful: the data you entered remains in the system during synchronization. Therefore, this saves a lot of time and effort when searching for suitable updates if they are needed.

How to update Xiaomi using OTA

Updating the firmware on a phone is not the easiest thing for a user who is encountering this problem for the first time. Now, with the help of OTA, you can simplify it as much as possible this procedure, which will become accessible even to a child.

Don't need any additional components, not even a computer, without which not a single update could be done before. All you need to do is make a few clicks and monitor the installation of applications. In general, all difficulties are removed, for example correct location file or use a specific name.

The system will not be updated for long, but the main thing is to ensure the following conditions for comfortable work:

  1. It is important that the smartphone is fully charged. The update will not be installed until the charge reaches at least 30%, and for some models the charge should be at least 60%. It's even better to Charger was connected to the network and was charging even while the update was being installed. If the smartphone turns off during the process, this may cause serious problems, which even professionals at the service center cannot always solve.
  2. It is important that the official version is installed on the smartphone Android firmware 6. If you have custom installed or have root rights, then it is better not to change anything unless absolutely necessary.
  3. The next step is to check for updates. To do this, you need to follow the following path: Menu - Settings - About phone - System updates - Check now.
  4. If the system sees that there is an update, it installs it. But to do this you need to restart the device.

The process itself takes some time, but if everything is done correctly, the phone will easily turn on and start working with the updated software. This procedure can be done regularly, even every day, but this is not necessary.

How to flash a smartphone using recovery

If for some reason your smartphone is not updated in the way we described above, you can go another way, no less popular, but much more complicated. Here is a diagram of how to do the flashing:

  • loader.
  • Download the new firmware for your phone model and rename it to "update.zip";
  • We send the firmware (it must have the format update.zip) to the root directory ( //sdcard/update.zip). To do this, you need to follow the following path: Mi3 - Inner memory(drop the file here update.zip);
  • Turn off the smartphone, press the power and volume up buttons;
  • When the screen blinks, release the power key, but hold down the volume up button;
  • We go into recovery mode;
  • Select an item install update.zip to system one;
  • We wait until the process completes and select reboot to system one.

In general, everything is logically clear. So if there is a need, like other smartphone manufacturers, they work perfectly according to this scheme.

Having bought a Xiaomi smartphone, we expect that it will receive some useful updates operating system and the proprietary MIUI shell, but time passes and there are still no updates. Why does this happen and how to make it happen? mobile device update?

This problem is not uncommon and is caused by several reasons:

  • The smartphone has custom firmware installed that cannot be updated;
  • automatic checking and downloading of a new firmware version is disabled in the system settings;
  • installed current version firmware.

Let's take a closer look at each of the above points.

Custom firmware

If you bought a Xiaomi smartphone delivered directly from China and it has Russian-language localization, there is a high probability that it has custom firmware installed. Such firmware, as a rule, is created by amateur enthusiasts with the goal of changing “to suit” some of the features of the smartphone. At the same time, by getting into the source code of the firmware, the ability to update it “over the air” is lost. automatic mode, and therefore the smartphone will not be able to update and you will have to constantly use what was installed initially.

Custom firmwares are useful when they are created for smartphones that do not have global firmware versions and are available by default only in Chinese and English languages. In this case, users can use firmware translated by “traditional craftsmen”, but must be prepared for the impossibility of receiving updates.

More information about the various firmware options can be found in the article:

In this case, you will need to reflash your smartphone via Fastboot using the application.

Checking for new firmware is disabled

It also happens that you have a firmware version installed on your smartphone, for example, a weekly one, but there is no sign that an update has arrived. This may be due to the fact that checking for updates is simply disabled.

You can check for updates yourself by going to your smartphone’s settings and clicking on the “System Update” button.

In the window that opens, click “Check for updates.” Must be enabled to check Mobile Internet or WiFi connection.

To further smartphone I checked the updates myself, just click on the ellipsis button (in the upper right corner) and go to the “Settings” item.

After the official release a new version MIUI can reach your phone in either a week or a month. Updates are distributed gradually to avoid severe stress on the servers. If you don't want to wait, you can update your Xiaomi through three points.

How to update Xiaomi via three points?

The update method may seem sophisticated because of the name, but in fact, the “three dots” means the icon for calling an additional menu when updating the system.

First of all, you need to download the firmware from the official website. Here we find our model by scrolling down the page a little - in our case it is Xiaomi Redmi 3s:

Next, you need to select the version depending on what firmware you currently have installed. You can read more about the types of firmware. If there is an official global version, select Stable ROM; for the weekly version, select Developer ROM and download it to your PC:

Opening Settings > About the phone > System update

In the window that opens, look for the icon in the form of three dots in the upper right corner and click on it. An auxiliary menu will open, where we are interested in the “Select firmware file” item:

In the explorer we indicate required file(in our case it is miui_HM3SGlobal_v9.5.5.0.MALMIFA)

Click OK, after which the smartphone will require a reboot and begin updating the system.

If you notice an error, select a piece of text and press Ctrl+Enter
