Windows. Viruses. Notebooks. Internet. office. Utilities. Drivers

Windows 10 has a " » to quickly reset the system to its original state. This is faster and more convenient than any of the possible ways to rearrange Windows.

In Windows 8, this function has been split into two: " Recovering a computer without deleting files " And " Remove all data and reinstall Windows ". The first saved all user files and settings, but reset the system to its default state, while deleting installed applications. The second, completely deleted everything, including user files. The user received a completely clean computer.

In Windows 10, these two functions are disabled, only in the process of resetting the system you will be asked whether to save your personal files or not.

How the Windows reset feature works

When you use the Windows reset feature, the system resets itself to its default state. If the Windows 10 that is installed on your PC came with it (that is, you bought a computer with ten preinstalled), after the reset, the system will be in the same state as when you bought it: all preinstalled software and drivers will be reinstalled. If you installed the OS yourself, Windows will be completely clean, without any third-party software.

You will be able to save your personal files, however, all manually installed programs and system settings will be deleted. Thanks to the reset function, you can fix, so to speak, system problems caused by third-party applications, system settings changes or viruses.

What's Really Happening

Microsoft itself has explained what actually happens when you reset Windows to its original state:

  • the computer boots into Windows RE (Windows Recovery Environment);
  • Windows RE cleans and formats Windows partitions before installing a clean copy of the OS;
  • the computer reboots into a new, clean Windows.

If the user chooses to save their files, the same thing happens. But before clearing the hard disk partitions, Windows RE scans them and places user files and settings in another place, and only after rearranging Windows does it return it back.

How to reset Windows through system settings

To reset Windows 10 through the settings, open the system settings, select the " Update and Security "and in the left column of the opened settings, select the section" Recovery ". Under " Reset your computer » click « Begin «:

In Windows 8, you need to do similar steps, only in the "Recovery" section there will be two items: "Restore your computer without deleting files" and "Delete all data and reinstall Windows."

In Windows 8, to reset the system while keeping your files, you need to select "Restore your computer without deleting files", to delete everything - "Delete all data and reinstall Windows".

If you want to delete everything, the system will ask you if you also need to clean up the hard drive. This option is perfect if the user plans to sell or give away his PC to someone.

How to reset the system from the boot menu

If you don't have the option to reset Windows from system settings, you can do so via the bootloader menu. This menu will be automatically launched if the OS fails to start on its own. From the menu select " Diagnostics ' and select ' Return to original state «.
