Windows. Viruses. Laptops. Internet. Office. Utilities. Drivers

– the most important peripheral device for modern computer. Without a printer, your computer workplace will not be complete. Therefore, printers can be found equally often both in offices and next to ordinary home computers.

One of the main problems that users have with printers is installation difficulties. This may be because the printer cannot simply be plugged into the computer like a mouse or keyboard. In this material we will talk about how to install a printer on a computer or laptop.

The entire process of installing a printer on a computer can be divided into three stages:

  • Connecting the printer to the power supply;
  • Connecting the printer to the computer;
  • Installing drivers;

To ensure that installing a printer no longer causes you any problems, we will consider all three of these stages in as much detail as possible.

Connecting the printer to the power supply.

The first thing to start with is connecting the printer to the power supply. There can be nothing complicated here. Place the printer where you want it and plug it into the nearest outlet. In most cases, a regular cable is used for connection. The same cable connects the monitor, system unit and other devices.

The only note is that when installing the printer on a computer, it cannot be connected to the power supply through a source uninterruptible power supply(UPS, ). The printer must only be connected directly to a power outlet. The thing is that the printer consumes too much power, so you won't be able to run it off a UPS anyway. Otherwise, the battery will discharge too quickly or may even fail.

Connecting the printer to the computer.

The next stage of installing the printer is directly to the computer or laptop. A variety of interfaces can be used to connect the printer. But, at home, the usual one is most often used. Therefore, we will consider this option.

Should come with the printer USB cable to connect to a computer. If the cable is not included in the package, or is already lost, then you can purchase such a cable at your nearest electronics store. When purchasing a USB cable, the only thing you need to know is the version of the cable. Printers can now be equipped USB interface 2.0 or USB 3.0.

Look at the USB connector on your printer, if it is blue and oblong, then it is USB 3.0. If it is white (gray/black) and square with beveled corners, then it is USB 2.0.

So after you have found required cable(USB 2.0 or USB 3.0) connect one end of the cable to the computer and the other to the printer.

Please note that the USB cable has a different connector shape on different sides. The flat connector is called Type A and connects to the computer. The square (USB 2.0) or blue oblong connector (USB 3.0) is called “type B” and connects to the printer.

Installing printer drivers.

Once you have connected the printer to your computer and power supply, you can begin installation. As a rule, the printer comes with a driver disk. From this disk you need to install the driver for the printer, after which the printer can be used.

If you have lost the driver disk, you can download the driver from the official website of your printer manufacturer.

Insert the driver disk into the drive and start the driver installation. The process of installing a printer driver is quite simple and is almost no different from installing any other program.

The only difference is that the installer may require you to disconnect the printer and reconnect it. In this case, simply unplug the USB cable and plug it back in a few seconds. After this, the process of installing printer drivers should continue.

Once the driver installation is complete, the printer will be ready to use. In some cases, you may need to restart your computer.

The production of computers is moving forward by leaps and bounds, but a computer has not yet been invented that eliminates the need to connect and install peripherals, thanks to which a lot of necessary actions are performed. At first glance it may seem that printer installation- a fairly simple process, but it also has many pitfalls, depending on various factors.

Connecting different types of printers to your computer

IN in this case It is not the type of printer itself that is considered, but the type of cable required to connect it. There are two types of ports: LPT – old-style port, located on the back wall system unit; and USB - can be located both on the front and back walls, in the case of a laptop - on both sides. LPT ports are practically never found in new computers, but manufacturers are gradually switching to producing USB printers, and in this case printer installation Available on both a personal computer and a laptop. An old LPT printer cannot be connected to a laptop. It is recommended to connect the printer when the computer is turned off.

Installing the device driver

After you have connected the printer and turned on the computer, the system will notify you that a new device has been detected and is searching for a driver. A driver disk for the device is usually supplied with the printer, and often contains the drivers used to perform printer installation any model of a certain line. It is advisable to insert the disk immediately, and then the system itself will analyze it, install it and display a message indicating that the device is ready for operation. If there is no disk, then the required driver can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s official website, unpack it, and the computer will search for it itself.

If this does not happen, click the “Start” button, open the “Control Panel” and go to the “Hardware and Sound” folder, select “Printers” and then “Add a printer”. The installation wizard will open, where you need to select “Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer” and follow the instructions that appear. If necessary installing a printer on Windows 7, then in this system there is no “Printers” item; instead, you need to select the “Add a device” item. In the window that appears, select your printer from the list and follow the instructions of the installation wizard.

Installing a Samsung Printer

Samsung is usually a progress-oriented company, and its peripherals adapt to the systems, so there are no major problems. However installation Samsung printer old model on systems Windows Vista and Windows 7 is not carried out automatically, even if all the drivers are present. In this case, the computer will ask you to specify the path to the file, you need to open the installation disk, find the folder with the name of your printer model, select the language folder in it and go to the “winxp” folder. The file with the .dat extension is the driver file.

Installing a Canon Printer

It is important to assemble Canon brand printers correctly before connecting to a computer; you will find all assembly instructions in the user manual. Usually the system accepts the proposed drivers and installs them itself, but after installation Canon printer completed, you will see a message asking you to align the print head. To perform alignment, insert the alignment paper that came with the printer into the tray and print a test page.

Installing an Epson printer

The Windows system usually accepts all printer models of this brand, but in the case of Windows XP the following problem may arise: if any printer was previously installed, then installation Epson printer accompanied by reinstallation of an existing driver. Therefore, before connecting the printer, remove all drivers from your computer, even when working with younger versions of the system.

Installing an HP Printer

The behavior of this brand of printer is radically different from all of the above: HP printer installation must be done with the device turned off. That is, you first need to connect the printer and, without turning it on, install the driver. After installing the driver, the system will ask for the device itself, and only after that you need to turn on the printer, then the wizard will complete the installation.

Basic problems and solutions

1. The printer did not print start page. Make sure the connection is correct, installing the printer driver went well, try reinstalling the device driver, update it. Most often the problem is that the cable is not securely fastened. In any case, you need to refer to the printer documentation and diagnose problems, the wizard of which can be launched from the control panel.

2. When you try to send a document for printing, it is sent to another printer or to Microsoft program XPS Document Writer. The installed printer is not detected by default. Open the “Printers and Faxes” item in the control panel, find the printer you need, click on it right click, in the menu – click on the line “Use as default”.

3. Every time it starts printer installation, an error occurs and the installation does not complete. In this case, check if there are drivers for another printer on your computer, and if so, remove them.

4. The device does not install or does not work correctly after printer installation ended successfully. Most likely the system is 64-bit (latest Windows versions), and the drivers were designed for 32-bit. Usually critical error does not occur, but it is advisable to update the driver through the official website of the device manufacturer.

When installing the device, you must carefully follow the instructions of the installation wizard, otherwise problems may occur the first time you use it. If you have any problems or need installing a network printer– the process is quite complicated for an unprepared person, it is better to turn to professionals. Qualified specialists of our company will quickly install and configure the printer, provide the necessary advice and help in resolving problems.

Solving the problem of how to set up a printer to print from a computer is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Nevertheless, this needs to be taken wisely and seriously, especially for those who like to work in Word and others text editors, who always need to have a printing device at hand.

In order to answer the question of how to install a printer on a computer running Windows OS, you can use two methods. One of them is to connect the printing device directly to personal computer- so-called local method. As for the second method, its use means installing a printing device via a network - the so-called. network method. In general, both methods are relatively simple, but if you do not strictly follow the instructions, you can easily get confused, resulting in the installation having to start from the very beginning.

In addition, take into account that the local method makes it possible to use office equipment on only one computer, while the network method allows you to use several personal computers at once, which are connected to one local network.

First method: local connection

To solve the problem of how to set up a printer to print from a computer, first you will need to establish a reliable and stable connection between your personal computer and the printer, using a high-quality USB cable. After this, connect the device to the electrical network. Next, follow these steps:

  • First of all, open the Start menu and click on the section with printing devices.
  • In the new window, pay attention to the top panel, where you need to click on the tab that involves installing a new printing device.
  • Now the installation wizard window should open in front of you, where among the two options you need to click on the top one: “Add local”.
  • At the next step, the wizard will ask you to decide on the optimal port. In general, you can leave everything unchanged and click on the existing port: “LPT1”. After this, click on the “Next” button.

After completing all the steps listed above, proceed directly to setting up the operation of the device connected to the PC. First, you will need to install the appropriate software, i.e. drivers. To solve this task, i.e. "how to install drivers", use the CD with setup file, which comes in the same set with the office equipment you purchased.

It should be noted that installing the MFP from a disk is a more convenient and preferable option.
If you don’t have the opportunity to use this installation method, then to solve a problem like “how to install a printer driver,” use the center Windows updates, but your PC must be connected to the Internet at this moment. It should be added that you can find a driver for your printer model on our website or the official website of its manufacturer.

The third way to install firewood on a new printer connected to a PC is to use the Hardware Installation Wizard, where you will need to select the appropriate option for your printing device, and then perform the following steps:

  • Having selected the manufacturer of your device and its specific name in the wizard window, click on the “Next” button.
  • In the next step, the installation wizard will prompt you to decide on a name for your device. Enter it and click on “Next”.
  • Now you need to select options for accessing the print device from other personal computers. In this case, you need to click either on “Allow sharing...” or on “No public access ….».

At this point you can stop installing the device, because... The problem of how to set up a printer on a computer has already been solved. Now all you have to do is run a print test to make sure that the device configured on Windows 7 is working correctly and your system is able to find it when a print job arrives.

To do this, you just need to click on the button that starts a test print of the page. It usually appears at the last stage of driver installation. Be sure to remember to check the “Use as default” checkbox there. It should be added that you can also install the printer on Windows 8 using the instructions described above.

Method two: network connection

  • To solve a problem related to how to connect a printer to a computer when organizing local network First of all, you have to go to the “Start” menu section, where a list of printing devices connected to the PC is displayed.
  • In the new window, you should click on the “Printer Installation” item and select the bottom one among the two options, i.e. “Add network, wireless...”
  • After that operating system Windows will automatically search for all printing devices installed and connected to the local network. Thus, the problem that is related to how to find a printer is solved.
  • As a result of this action, the PC will connect to the device and automatically install the software necessary for it. Thanks to this, you do not need to waste time completing this step “how to install drivers for a printer.” But sometimes manual installation is required. In particular, “Install drivers” may pop up in the installation wizard window. To fix the problem, simply click on this button.
  • After this, a message will appear stating that you have successfully installed such and such a printer. Click on "Next".

Thus, answers to questions about how to add a printer and how to install a printer have been found. In general, installing and updating a printer driver is not at all difficult and this task does not take much time, the main thing is to make a test print at the end.

But if the sheet sent for printing did not print, then you should make sure that the addition of a new device was carried out without any restrictions for such a device. The following option is also possible: the equipment intended for printing is simply not connected to the main PC. Also, try updating installed drivers. To do this, open the device properties in the “Devices and Printers” section, then open the “Advanced” tab and click “Change” next to the device driver. The update will then be installed on the PC automatically.

In general, a correctly and correctly installed device should work in absolutely normal mode.

The vast majority of modern printers do not require a special installation procedure in Windows XP. If you turn on the printer while working with the system, after connecting it to your computer, the operating system will detect it and make the necessary settings so that you can use it while working with Windows. After a short time required for setup, the new printer is ready for use. However sometimes automatic installation may not work and you will have to install the printer manually.

To install a new printer, as well as to check and configure previously installed printers, you should open a special folder. All folders related to hardware and system settings are located in the folder Control Panel(Control Panel). By selecting the main command of the same name Windows menu XP, you will launch Explorer and open the corresponding folder. More details about working with this folder will be discussed below, but for now we note that there are two modes for viewing the contents of the folder - classic and Web viewing mode. The default is the second mode. In this mode, the icons of the main groups of controls are displayed in the right part of the Explorer window. Click on the icon with the name Printers and other devices(Printers and Other Hardware) to access printers, scanners, digital cameras, keyboards, mice, gaming devices, and faxes. Icons appear in File Explorer indicating available tasks and various devices(Fig. 3.1). At the same time, links to other groups of controls will appear in the taskbar. You can start the printer installation procedure by clicking on the appropriate link, but it is better to first navigate to the folder containing a description of all printers and faxes installed on the system.

Figure 3.1.

Click on the icon with the name Printers and faxes(Printers and Faxes) to go to the folder for working with this equipment. By the way, if you use the classic view of the control panel, all the icons will appear on the right side of the explorer window when you select the main menu command Control Panel(Control Panel). Double-clicking the icon will take you to the desired folder.

No matter how you open the desired folder, icons will appear on the right side of the Explorer window indicating all the printers installed on your computer. In addition, the folder contains a wizard icon that makes it easier to connect a new printer to the system. This folder may also contain fax icons, which will be discussed below. If none of the icons are selected, you will see a command to install a new printer in the taskbar. When you select the printer icon, commands for setting it up appear in the taskbar (Fig. 3.2).

Figure 3.2.

The Windows XP system allows you to connect several printers to your computer, so there can also be several icons. If an icon with the name of your printer is present in the folder, then everything is fine and you can print to the printer from any program running under Windows control. If there is no such icon, then you need to complete the printer installation procedure. To facilitate this procedure, use special master printer installation. However, it should be noted that some printer manufacturers, such as Hewlett Packard, provide their devices with a floppy disk or CD containing their own printer software installation program, without using a wizard. Windows installation. Although you can use the wizard for such printers, in this case the printer support built into Windows system, and not offered by the printer manufacturer on the disc that is distributed with it.

To launch the Add Printer Wizard, double-click on the icon Installing the Printer(Add printer). The wizard's first dialogue introduces you to the matter and explains what this master will guide you step by step to install the printer (Fig. 3.3, left). Since you don't need to enter anything in this dialog, let's move straight to the next dialog. The transition to the second dialog is carried out by pressing the button Further(Next). The second dialog in the Add Printer Wizard asks you to confirm whether the printer is connected directly to your computer or whether the printer is connected to computer network, just like your computer (Fig. 3.3).

Figure 3.3. The first dialogs of the Add Printer Wizard

If you want to connect network printer, you should read the section of our book concerning networking in Windows, or contact your network administrator for assistance. Now we will consider the option of directly connecting the printer to your computer. By checking the box in the dialog, you will give Windows command automatically find and install the printer. Click the button Further(Next) to continue working. If the printer is automatically detected and installed, you will skip the next few steps. If Windows was unable to connect the printer, the corresponding dialog will inform you about this (Fig. 3.3, right). In this case, you will need to manually specify all the necessary parameters, for which click the button Further(Next). The following wizard dialog will appear on the screen, prompting you to determine the port to which the printer is connected (Fig. 3.4, left). The same dialog will appear immediately after the second wizard dialog if you have not checked the box automatic search printer. Usually a standard printer port is used LPT1 or universal serial bus port USB. To make it easier, a standard connector is drawn in the dialogue, which is used to connect using the port LPT1,

Let's mark the port with the name FILE. He describes virtual printer, which may not actually be on the computer. If you install a printer, specifying that it is connected to this port, then when printing on such a printer, a special file will be created that you can transfer to another computer. If you have a printer installed on this computer, you can print it. This way you can, for example, print to a high-quality printer from a computer that does not have such a printer connected. In reality, the printing will be done in a completely different place.

Select the desired port by selecting it in the list, then click the button Further(Next) to continue the installation. After specifying the printer port, the next wizard dialog prompts you to select the printer model from the list (Fig. 3.4,). This dialog contains lists of printer manufacturers and models. Select your printer manufacturer from the list of manufacturers by clicking on it. Then, from the list of printers, select specific model printer.

Figure 3.4.

If your printer is not on the list, then you should use the floppy disk or CD that should be included with your printer. In this case, click the button Install from disk(Have disk). A dialog for selecting the location where the drivers are located will appear on the screen (Fig. 3.4). You can enter the path in the input field, or you can click the button Review(Browse) to select the desired folder in the dialog that appears. After specifying the address of the driver supplied on the disk, you will be returned to the wizard. After specifying your printer model in one of the following ways, click Further(Next) to move to the next dialog.

In a new dialog, the wizard will ask you to select a name for the printer, and will also offer to use it as the default printer (Fig. 3.5). You can use any name as a name, but it is better to leave the name that the system offers you. If you have multiple printers connected to your computer, all programs will print to the default printer. Of course, you can change your default printer to another one at any time. Most likely, there is only one printer connected to your computer, so you do not need to enter anything in the dialog.

Click the button Further(Next), and you will go to the next dialog (Fig. 3.5). It specifies whether your printer will be used as a network printer. If your computer is on a network and other users will be printing to the printer, you should answer in the affirmative. In most cases the printer will not be shared.

Figure 3.5.

The new printer is almost installed. All that remains is to check its operation by printing something on it. To do this, click the button Further(Next) and go to the next dialog of the Add Printer Wizard. A dialog will appear prompting you to print a test page to check the correct operation of the printer (Fig. 3.5). It is better to set the switch to the position that allows you to print a test page, after which you should press the button Further(Next) in the dialogue.

The last dialog of the wizard will appear on the screen, summarizing the work completed (Fig. 3.6). After this, be sure to check the printer. It must be connected to the computer, turned on, and loaded with clean paper. When the printer is ready to use, press the button Ready(Ready) to complete the wizard and install the printer on your system.

The wizard will complete its work, the necessary drivers will be installed, after which the test page will begin printing on the printer. The print test page is designed to demonstrate that the printer can run in Windows and to provide a visual check of the printer's print quality. In addition, various Technical information related to your printer settings (Fig. 3.6).

Fig 3.6.

Once the test page has been sent to print, a dialog box will appear asking you if the test page has printed correctly (Figure 3.6). If you can read the printed text on the test page and there are no printing defects visible, click OK on this dialog to close it. Button press Diagnostics(Troubleshot) results in a challenge help system to help solve printing problems. This completes the installation of the new printer in the Windows XP operating system.

Another icon will appear in the Printers and Faxes folder with the name of the connected printer. Now that the printer is connected, it is already configured by default, and for most cases this setting is sufficient. However, sometimes it is necessary to change the printer settings. To do this, select the printer icon by clicking on it and select the link in the taskbar (Select printing preferences).

A printer settings dialog with several tabs will appear on the screen (Fig. 3.7). Appearance settings dialog varies greatly for different types printers, but among the parameters, most likely, there will be several mandatory ones. On the first tab of the dialog (Fig. 3.7), the orientation of the sheet of paper is set, that is, it is determined how the printing will proceed - along the short or along the long side of the sheet of paper. From the list, you can choose to print multiple pages of a document on one sheet of paper. This is often used to save paper when printing drafts. Naturally, page sizes will be greatly reduced. You can also set the printing order of multi-page documents from beginning to end or vice versa. Changing the print order on some printers makes it easier to assemble the sheets in the correct sequence.

Figure 3.7.

On the second tab of the dialog (Fig. 3.7), print quality is adjusted and paper is selected. Sets the print resolution, which determines the quality of the resulting prints. Typically this parameter contains the number of dots printed on a one-inch piece of paper. The higher this value, the higher the print quality. Sometimes this parameter is replaced with a verbal description of print quality. High average, low quality is set, and no numbers are used. Most printers have multiple paper sources, such as sheet paper and envelopes. The list located in the dialog determines where the paper will come from when printing. For some printers, you can select the type of paper to use. If your printer supports color printing, you can choose between black and white or color printing.

For more complex printer settings, press the button Additionally(Advanced). This will open a settings dialog that allows you to change absolutely all the printing parameters that can be configured in this printer model. However, in most cases this setting will not be necessary.

Additional capabilities for working with some printers are provided using special programs, links to which are located at separate tab dialogue (Fig. 3.7). Using these programs, you can, for example, check the functionality of the printer and, in some cases, restore it. Once you have configured all the settings, click OK in the dialog to close it. It should be noted that settings changes made in the described way will apply when using the printer in all programs. If, while working with some program, you change the current printer settings by going to the settings from the print dialog, the changes will only take effect when printing from this program and will be canceled when you finish working with the program. The next time you start the program, the print settings will be the same again.

A printing device today is already quite a common attribute not only of office, but also home computer, and operating system manufacturers have provided the maximum simple ways connecting the printer to the computer. Therefore, the procedure for adding this peripheral device to the set of hardware connected to your computer is not difficult.

Instructions

  • Find a convenient location for the printer. At the same time, keep in mind that the printer will need to be connected by cable to the computer and to a power outlet, that the printer has retractable trays and opening covers, and that devices of this kind should not be placed near heating radiators.
  • Connect network cable from the kit purchased with the printer, first to the device, and then to a power outlet. In the same sequence, connect the cable connecting the printer to the computer. As a rule, the printing device is connected to a USB port; the other option (LPT port) is practically not used today.
