Windows. Viruses. Notebooks. Internet. office. Utilities. Drivers

At work, I had to deal with a change in time zones due to the new Federal Law and the transition of the Russian Federation to a new time zone on a bunch of devices (from routers to servers). All vendors have released the appropriate patches, and only two operating systems have delivered system administrators hassle, at work these are ancient machines on Windows XP, which Microsoft has stopped supporting, but has not released a patch, and Android 4.4.2 KitKat on my samsung galaxy S4 Mini i9195 Black Edition. Updating timezones on Windows XP does not fit the theme of the site, but we will discuss how to fix timezones for a smartphone in this article.

I have a smartphone on firmware 4.4.2 KitKat, so all the information below is relevant only for this smartphone.

In fact, everything is not so sad at all, life is in full swing in the Android community, all you need is just Root on your smartphone and package Time Zone Fixer downloaded from w3bsit3-dns.com, Google Play, or from here.

Next, start, agree with Root rights, click to update time zones, reboot, and rejoice that Moscow is again in the +3 time zone. You rejoice like that, walk for a couple of days and understand that something is not right. It turns out that some applications continue to live in the time zone (in particular, in the SMS and calls application) where Moscow has +4, which is confusing. This is due to the ICU internalization library:

The problem arises only on Android 4.4 and is due to the fact that the ICU internationalization library is used there to display the time. It has its own database of timezones (of course, the ancient version) for a beautiful display of time. Those. for the system, the time is correct, but it draws it incorrectly.
Accordingly, it is necessary to replace the file with the localization database with a fresh one.

Good people have written an algorithm, a site for modifying the library, everything is described in detail here: http://goo.gl/lM6Bpv

You can do everything yourself, but you can go a little more simply, I have already changed the timezones and checked it on my device, so you can follow this instruction:

  1. Download modified icudt51l.dat file: download
  2. Download and install Root Explorer: download
  3. Copy at Help Root Explorer file icudt51l.dat in /system/usr/
  4. Assign rights to it rw- r— r—
  5. Replace old file in /system/usr/icu/ folder
  6. Delete junk file icudt51l.dat in /system/usr/
  7. Reload

Point #2 is important, I myself have encountered problems, because. I like to carry out all manipulations in ES Explorer, but it does not work correctly with system files and often reboots the smartphone without adding the file. As a result, the smartphone will not boot up, and the phone will have to be reflashed! DO NOT use ES Explorer for step #5!

Finally, the smartphone is fully ready to continue working on the territory of Russia)

It's no secret that Russian legislators, especially those who sit in the lower house of parliament, are very active guys and at least don't pay them a salary, but let them issue various regulations. So, in the summer of 2014, parliamentarians took and adopted another law on the replacement of time zones in the territory Russian Federation. In some regions, the time zone has not changed, but in some it has changed to a new one. But, many electronics manufacturers were not ready for such a turn, that in the fall the time suddenly took and changed.

Samsung was not ready for such a radical step either. Since even for its flagship S5, Samsung did not bother to release a timely update to the firmware with the corrected time zone. For example, in Moscow, the time zone from GMT+4 was switched to GMT+3. What this translation is fraught with for users? And the fact that the harmonious planned course of the life of the owner is immediately violated. All reminders, all meetings and even entries in the call log, move in space-time in the blink of an eye and guess what time the reminder should be set for, so that it works exactly when it needs to, not every holder of a red diploma from a prestigious university can. And what can we say about others?

And while Samsung is slowing down with the release of the update, let's try to figure out on our own what needs to be done with the phone. sell and buy Nokia or iPhone, so that it normally displays the time and with the desired time zone.

Option 1. Automatic.

Option 2. Pretend to be a hose.

In the case when the cellular operator is so careless that it does not provide a reliable time service to its subscribers, then it is generally worth considering how expedient it is to continue paying such an operator. Well, while there are reflections, it is necessary to manually set the current time zone in the phone.

To do this, you must disable the functions of obtaining time, date and time zone from mobile operator. To do this, you need to go to the phone settings, then to system settings and select "Date and time". Here we remove the daws from "Automatic detection of time" and from "Autodetect. time zone". And then, in the time zone selection menu, select the time zone of the area where, firstly, there is no transition to winter or summer time, and secondly, the desired time zone operates.

Since the GMT + 3 zone operates in a new way for Moscow, and the GMT + 4 zone is hard-coded in the phone for Moscow, in order for the time to return to normal, you will have to select, for example, Minsk, whose time zone corresponds to values necessary for Moscow. For other regions, you need to act in a similar way.

And this method of changing the time zone is the most correct and safest until a normal firmware update is released for the phone, in which this problem is solved by the manufacturer. Although purely aesthetically, when using someone else's time zone, not everything is clean. For example, when you send a calendar invitation from your phone, the recipient might be confused by the fact that you are in the time zone of Belarus.

Other options are only suitable for advanced users, as they can easily turn your brand new S5 into nothing more than a bunch of silicon, glass and plastic. I warned.

Option 3. For the Jedi.

If you are a true computer enthusiast, then surely your phone is already rooted. If you don't know what it is, then you don't have to read further.

Tailored for worldwide use, Android not only has true multilingualism built into it, but also the ability to use your phone in any time zone. Usually time zones are quite constant and do not change for decades. And it is for this reason that all data on the names of time zones, as well as their offsets from the zero time zone, are entered into a special database located in a protected section. internal memory phone. And you can change it only either by updating the entire firmware, or by getting root access to change only the data directly in this database.

So, root access is available and in order to replace the data in the database with time zones on the phone, you need to use free program Time Zone Fixer. On startup, the program determines current version the database installed on the phone and, if necessary, updates the values in it. After completing the work, you need to restart your phone. Of course, you can also change the database using other programs that are also available from Google Play, as well as carry out all the manipulations completely independently using only standard tools.

After the reboot, the required zone for Moscow GMT + 3 finally appears in the list of time zones, and the correct zones for other regions. Choose the desired (your) region, without first forgetting to turn off automatic update time and timezone from cellular network. And it seems that everything should get better and get better, but, alas, the Galaxy S5 works on Android system 4.4.x, namely in the family of these systems, for the sake of beauty or some other purposes, time zones were registered in one more place. It is possible that similar behavior will be retained in all future versions of Android.

Now, the time and time zone on the phone are displayed correctly, but the events in Google Calendar, the time of calls in the log and SMS in the SMS folder are displayed incorrectly. The old time zone is used. The thing is that it is necessary to change one more file, in which, at the behest of not quite competent system developers, alternative values for time zones are stored. To fix this, you need to do the following:

A. Copy the file located at /system/usr/icu/icu51dt.dat from the phone to the computer or to the phone's SD card. This can be done, for example, using Root Explorer or similar program. Please note that the file is quite large, about 18 megabytes.

B. Upload the resulting file to the site page of one of the fans of the operating system and wait for the processing to finish. Download the processed file back. If the site is unavailable, then you need to search for already processed files specifically for your phone, or try to figure it out yourself with the ICU toolkit.

B. Copy the downloaded processed file from the site back to /system/usr/icu/icu51dt.dat. Make sure the permissions for all groups are set to at least read mode. Reboot phone.

D. Enjoy the correct time zone, no time shift in the calendar, calls and SMS.

Afterword

In general, the term GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is somewhat outdated. The fact is that no one measures Greenwich Mean Time for a long time. The time of the British Empire is over, and so is GMT. Today, it is customary to use UTC as a reference point. Although for domestic use the difference exists only in the name of the standards.

On the other hand, the behavior of both producers, who leave their consumers to their fate, and mobile operators, which year after year spit on their subscribers, not deigning to adjust their networks in order to issue the correct time and the correct time zone, are simply outrageous and reprehensible. This is especially true for companies that forcibly protect their phones with all kinds of security systems that do not allow users to change the system settings of their phones.
