Introduction

After the announcement of the Galaxy S4, it became clear that Samsung, according to tradition, will begin to produce a huge number of outwardly almost identical (as they have recently been called) “bars of soap”: the only difference is that some are smaller, others are larger. The filling, as it is right, is much weaker than the flagship model, but significant investments are not required. However, the cost is still kept near the mark of 20 thousand rubles.

Obviously, if there is a version of S3 mini, then there must be S4 mini. Unfortunately, both gadgets received from their older counterparts, perhaps, only part of the name and appearance, although people have long demanded powerful devices with small dimensions. Alas, the manufacturers do not hear us and continue to reason logically in their own way: since the phone is small, it means that the hardware can be cut.

In the review, attention will be paid only to the main points, since we have a typical sample of the products of the South Korean giant.

Design, dimensions, controls

As already mentioned at the beginning of the text, as soon as the new creation of Samsung sees the light, expect the offspring in the form of dozens of smartphones and phones that look identical in appearance. Therefore, naturally, S4 mini almost completely copies the original Galaxy S4. Nevertheless, from my point of view, the appearance of the current flagship is quite successful: thin, light, despite the plastic, durable, albeit glossy. Absolutely the same emotions cause S4 mini. It is worth adding that the device, due to its even smaller size (124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm) and weight (107 grams), is cool in the hand! Really comfortable, you don't want to let go. In fact, the experience of "communication" with the S4 mini is very interesting: similar appearance, functions and menus, but one-handed operation is more comfortable. I think it will be appreciated by those who clearly dislike "spade" phones.

The front side, as always, is protected by glass. It is unlikely that Gorilla Glass (although, perhaps, the first generation), but not a single scratch appeared in a month of active use. Under the glass there is a dark gray plastic (there is also a white color), on which black small rhombuses are applied. Back panel also made of plastic, but here the pattern is slightly different, i.e. light gray diamonds on a black background. I think it looks cool, at least previous version S3 mini did not cause me any emotions.

The assembly is excellent, as if the case is non-separable: nothing backlash, no creaks.

A thin edging along the perimeter of the front part forms a small side, the sides of the device are semi-gloss plastic, painted like metal.

Top on the front side - a camera for video calls, two sensors (lighting and proximity), a speech speaker, taken away by a metal mesh. The speaker volume is very high, in a quiet environment it is worth turning it down. The interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly, the timbre is pleasant, mostly mid frequencies are heard. During a call, you can adjust the level not only standard means, but also activate special function"Additional volume". A similar function is available in almost all new Samsung devices.

Below the screen are two touch buttons"Back" and "Menu", and between them - the unforgettable mechanical button "Home". Tactile sensations relative to the Galaxy S4 are about the same: the stroke is minimal, the pressure is firm. The touch buttons have a backlight, it is white, dim, but quite noticeable during the day.

At the bottom there is a microUSB and the main microphone, at the top there is an infrared port (inherited from the flagship), a second microphone (used to record sound in stereo and noise reduction), 3.5 mm audio output.

On the left is the volume control, and on the right is the power button.

Behind - a camera that rises slightly above the body, and a flash, as well as a speaker speakerphone.

To open the lid, you need to pry it from the notch at the top left. Under the battery are slots for a microSIM card and microSDHC.

Display

Unlike the previous model, this one has a 4.3-inch screen (physical size - 53x94 mm). If earlier 4 inches was considered a “shovel”, now even a slightly larger size is touching: they say, what a small and nice little phone. In S3 mini, the resolution was 480x800 pixels, in S4 mini it was slightly increased - 540x960 pixels (qHD). Both there and there the matrix is \u200b\u200bSuperAMOLED. We will not argue how good or bad it is, since all this belongs to the category of taste. Personally, I love bright colors and the maximum "depth" of black, and let the SA-matrix fade more than IPS in the sun, but, for example, my work is not related to constantly being under the direct rays of the sun. By the way, in the previous material (S4 Active test), I empirically found out that the SA-matrix on the S4 in sunny weather displays even a slightly better picture than the PLS-matrix on the S4 Active. Below is a comparison of the screens of S4 mini (left), S4 Active and S4 (right):

Matrices under the microscope:

In the "Display" settings, the "Screen mode" item has been preserved:

Battery

A removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh, 3.8 V, 7.22 Wh is installed. Despite, it seems, not the largest battery capacity, the overall operating time pleased!

The developers claim that the device will work in standby mode for 300 hours, and in talk mode - up to 12 hours.

With 15-20 minutes of calls per day, 4-5 hours of 3G, a couple of hours of Wi-Fi, an hour of watching videos and listening to music, the Galaxy S4 mini managed to squeeze out just over 10 hours of work from a single charge.

More numbers:

  • Only in talk mode, the device works up to 8 hours
  • Only when playing video (720p) at maximum volume in headphones and maximum screen brightness - just over 5 hours
  • Only playing music in headphones at maximum volume - about 45 hours
  • Games only - a little over 3 hours

Communication options

Smartphone works in cellular networks 2G (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and 3G (850/900/1900/2100 MHz), LTE is present only in the i9195 model. Speed HSDPA - up to 42 Mbps, HSUPA - up to 5.76 Mbps. Available Bluetooth version 4.0 HS (A2DP, LE, EDR).

There is a wireless WiFi connection 802.11a/b/g/n (Dual band). The unit can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot) and file transfer (Wi-Fi Direct).

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is also used for file transfer and data synchronization. When connected to a PC, the minika is defined as a USB flash device (MTP) or a camera (PTP).

SAR value

The phone has been manufactured to the utmost acceptable levels exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy recommended by the Council of the EU. These standards prohibit the sale mobile phones whose radiation level (called the specific absorption rate, SAR) exceeds 2.0 watts per kilogram of body weight. During testing (courtesy of Samsung), the maximum SAR for this model was 0.298 W/kg at the head, 0.361 W/kg at the body.

When used, the actual SAR values of the device are well below the above values. This is due to the fact that for the system to operate efficiently and reduce the impact on the network, the operating power mobile device is automatically reduced if the call does not require full power. The lower the output power of the device, the lower the SAR value.

Memory and memory card

The developers decided not to save on random access memory, so we set here the most optimal amount for such a device - 1.5 GB. Therefore, the device does not slow down at all and does not experience difficulties with launching applications. Free on average about 900 MB - a huge amount for such a smartphone.

Flash memory - 8 GB. A little over 4 GB is allocated for application installations and data storage. Of course, there is a slot for a microSDHC memory card, the maximum amount of which can be 64 GB.

Camera

Two cameras are used here: the main one is 8 MP (F2.6, 33 mm) with autofocus and the front camera is 1.9 MP without autofocus. There is a single section LED flash. The maximum photo resolution is 3264x1836 pixels, video - 1920x1080 pixels at 30 frames per second.

The quality of still images is similar to those taken with S4 Active, ie. a little better Galaxy S2, but slightly worse than the Galaxy S3. What prevented me from using the same module as in the Galaxy S3, I do not understand.

Video and sound writes cleanly, there is no pixelation.

Video file characteristic:

  • File Format: MP4
  • Video codec: AVC, 17 Mbps
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC, 128 Kbps
  • Channels: 2 channels, 48 kHz

Performance

In a smartphone samsung galaxy S4 mini is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset, dual-core Krait 1.7 GHz (28 nm, ARMv7) processor. Adreno 305 is used as a graphics accelerator.

The device works smoothly, there are no interface brakes or glitches, and there are no lags. Almost everything goes with toys.

Below - brief information and performance tests (CPU-Z, Quadrant Standard, Antutu Benchmark, 3D Mark):

Replenished new version popular "four" Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini review which summarizes all the most interesting information about this model.

Outwardly, as promised by Samsung representatives, this phone completely copies the base model, except for the dimensions. The reduced “copy” has dimensions of 12.4x6.13x0.89cm and weighs 107g.

Performance and Software

Tests carried out using specialized applications showed that in almost all main parameters the mini version loses to the older S4 model.

Unlike the base model, it uses not eight, but a dual-core processor and, moreover, with a clock frequency of 1.7 GHz that is less than a tenth. The manufacturers also considered it necessary to reduce the RAM by 500MB and leave only 1.5GB. Similarly with the base memory, it is at the level of entry-level budget devices - 8GB. The device runs on Android 4.2 operating system. The smartphone has a GLONASS GPS navigation module, a built-in geomagnetic compass, an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini specs touch screen as follows:

Number of pixels per inch: 256;

Diagonal: 4.3'.

The screen supports multitouch technology, which recognizes not only single touches on the screen, but also multi-finger gestures. The screen accepts up to eight simultaneous touches.

The presence of a proximity sensor allows, when the device approaches the head for a telephone conversation, block the sensor and dim the screen to save energy.

The screen is covered with protective glass with anti-reflective and oleophobic coating. Automatic adjustment brightness in a dark room reduces the brightness and under the sun, on the contrary, increases for the convenience of the user.

Camera

Traditionally for smartphones, S4 mini has two cameras - the main one and the front one. The main camera is more productive and thanks to the 8 megapixel camera allows you to take pictures with a resolution of 3264X1836. The camera has good sharpness, and the image digitization algorithms used in the device allow you to get good photos. The 1.9MP selfie camera has a default resolution of 1280X720. The main camera allows you to shoot video with a resolution of 1080p. The video is saved in MP4 format. In low light conditions, LED flash is used. It can be activated in automatic mode if the light sensor shows a prohibitively low level. The flash can also be turned on and off manually.

Battery

The review of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini would be somewhat disappointing were it not for the battery of this smartphone. Modest by today's standards, a 1900 mAh battery, with a relatively small screen power consumption, allows you to watch videos for twelve and a half hours or four and a half hours to enjoy 3D games. In this regard, the phone bypasses even some of the flagship "widescreen".

Conclusion

Despite the proud S4 index in the name of the smartphone, it essentially has little in common with the base model, practically one name remains. The specifications eloquently tell us that this is a completely different smartphone model in terms of hardware and performance. Of course, marketers have made every effort to sell the device, they even gave it a flagship name, but alas, not its capabilities.

So, in this article we will figure out how much worse or better is the younger brother of the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone.

The first thing to consider is the appearance of the device called Galaxy S4 Mini. As we have already mentioned, it is practically no different from its enlarged version. The same materials were used in its production, the design contains the lines characteristic of the Galaxy line. Unless he has reduced the display to 4.3 inches, the weight has become 107 grams, and the overall dimensions are as follows: 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm. Thanks to this, it is much more comfortable to hold in your hand than the Galaxy S4, and it is more popular with users who prefer small smartphones to huge phones that sometimes do not even fit in their pockets.

Made entirely of plastic, the Galaxy S4 Mini still houses the physical Home button and touch-sensitive Back and Menu keys at the bottom of the device. Both the front panel and the back are painted black, plus diamonds are applied to the metal, which slightly dilute the boring design.

Also below you can find a microUSB port and a microphone. And at the top is infrared port, a second microphone and a 3.5mm audio jack. By tradition, on the left side we see the volume keys, and on the opposite side there is a power off / on button.

On the rear panel, as usual, there is a camera, and immediately below it is a flash and an additional speaker for hands-free calling.

As we said, the Galaxy S4 Mini has a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. Its quality is slightly better than the Galaxy S3, which has a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The mini-smartphone display itself received a Super AMOLED matrix. Someone says that such displays are worse, while others, on the contrary, like only these screens. The fact is that these screens display black colors very realistically, but white is the opposite, with an admixture of green or even purple. But all other colors are very bright and saturated.

However, the brighter the screen, the more it consumes battery power. Galaxy S4 Mini has lithium ion battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh. It would seem why this battery has such a small volume, because it reduces the battery life of the device. In fact, it turned out that 1900 mAh provides sufficient battery life without additional recharging.

Samsung assures that Galaxy smartphone S4 Mini can last about 10 hours if you talk on the phone 15 or 20 minutes a day, 3G Internet will work for about 4-5 hours and Wi-Fi is about the same. As for listening to music and watching videos, you should spend an hour on them.

In constant talk mode, the Galaxy S4 Mini will last about 8 hours, if you listen to music on headphones at full volume and with the maximum brightness of the display, then the smartphone will last for 5 hours. If the brightness is minimal, then you can listen to music for 45 hours without recharging the device. Well, when you play, the smartphone will only last 3 hours of battery life.

In addition, the Galaxy S4 Mini supports 2G, 3G, HSDPA, LTE is only present in the i9195 models, and of course there is also Bluetooth 4.0 HS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and a microUSB 2.0 port.

Let's move on to a more serious one - this is a consideration of the operational and internal memory of a smartphone, camera, processor, operating system, etc.

The mini-phone received 1.5GB of RAM from Samsung. In principle, for not particularly powerful device this is quite enough - it will not slow down, and all programs and applications suitable for it will be able to work perfectly. 900MB of RAM remains for applications, programs and games, the rest goes to the processor and operating system.

Inner memory the phone has 8 GB, but only 4 GB is allocated for storing applications and similar data. If desired, the user can expand the flash memory using removable media, namely, microSD memory cards up to 64GB.

The Galaxy S4 Mini received two cameras: a front camera with a resolution of 1.9 megapixels, and a rear camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels and autofocus. The phone also has a single-section LED flash for shooting at night or in low light conditions. Photos can be taken from maximum resolution 3264 x 1836 pixels while video is 1920 x 1080 pixels. Video recording is possible at 30 frames per second.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini smartphone received a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor with a clock frequency of 1.7 GHz and GPU Adreno 305. Although the processor is not the most powerful, it supports almost all modern toys and programs.

So far, the smartphone is running Android 4.2.2 operating system. It implements all the usual functions specific to this firmware. Perhaps soon there will be an update from the operating system Android system 4.3 Jelly Beans.

The standard player from Samsung, which is installed on many devices of this company, plays music. The sound quality is excellent, suitable for listening with or without headphones.

The speaker itself is not the loudest, and the sound comes from it slightly bassy, but clear.

It is noteworthy that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini supports FM radio, but the Galaxy S4 Active does not.

To watch videos, of course, there is a video player that reads the following codecs: H264, Xvid, DivX and video formats such as AVI, MP4, MKV, WMV. Well, if you prefer to watch movies in other formats, then it is better to download any video player suitable for you from Google Play market.

The cost of this device is 16,000 rubles. A bit pricey for such an average device. However, if you prefer small 4-inch displays and are happy with its power and design, then the Galaxy S4 Mini is worth a closer look.

If I had been told three years ago that a 4-inch smartphone could be called a Mini, I would have taken it as a bad joke. However, today, among 5-6-inch devices, models of a smaller diagonal really look like a "mini". Manufacturers could easily increase screen sizes indefinitely, but everything has a reasonable limit, and companies have already begun to face an unsolvable problem of human physiology: phones are getting bigger, but fingers remain the same. As a result, today manufacturers are beginning to actively produce compact models that are similar in design to the flagship ones, but differ in hardware stuffing. After two weeks of active use Galaxy versions S4 Mini with two SIM-cards, I tried to find out what this smartphone is worse than the S4, and what it is superior to.

Little flagship

Speaking of Galaxy design S4 Mini, it is simply impossible not to remember the S4, they are so similar. In fact, Mini is a smaller copy of the flagship. Samsung wanted to emphasize this so much that they didn’t even put the Duos brand logo on the body of the smartphone in the dual SIM version. Compared to the S4, which has already come close to the boundary of comfortable use, and in some cases even stepped over it, the Mini fits very well in the hand.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 124.6 × 61.3 × 8.9 mm, with a weight of 107 grams. The body is very well assembled. The design is identical to the S4: the back cover is made of plastic and can be removed to replace the SIM card, battery and memory card. The lid, as in all new Samsung smartphones, bends very easily.

However, the case itself has a rigid construction, so the thin lid fits tightly to it, creating the effect of a monolithic structure. It is convenient to hold the device with both right and left hands, the case is absolutely symmetrical. On its left side is the volume rocker.

Despite the relatively small display, the screen lock / unlock key is placed on the right side, and depending on the hand, it fits comfortably under the index finger and thumb.

All side buttons are slightly raised above the body, and are easy to grope blindly.

At the bottom of the S4 Mini is a microUSB port and a microphone speaker, at the top - a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an infrared port and another microphone.

The entire front panel of the smartphone is protected by Gorilla Glass. Over 4.3- inch display Mini has a speaker slot, next to which are light and proximity sensors, as well as a 2-megapixel camera window.

Under the screen you can find the standard for Samsung smartphones control buttons - two touch and one mechanical. On the back of the device is an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and a speaker hole.

From one model to another, Samsung retains good ergonomics, so there are no serious complaints about the S4 Mini in terms of usability. The only silver edging around the case is made of slippery glossy plastic, which contributes to the fall of the smartphone from the hands.

If we talk about the size of the case, then I would not call the Galaxy S4 Mini “mini” in any way. To me, a smartphone with a 4.3-inch display should be classified as a medium size, and this is a strange Samsung marketing trick. For myself, I noted that after the Galaxy S4 and S4 Active, which I used recently, the Mini really took a little getting used to the diagonal. But if you remember that the Galaxy SII was approximately that size, everything falls into place. Moreover, it is more convenient to work with such a smartphone with one hand. Recently, I often run in the morning, and Mini is better for this than older models, it is corny smaller and lighter. As a result, when you run, the device does not pull the pocket.

Performance and platform

At the heart of the S4 Mini is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, which includes a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor and Adreno 305 graphics. All this is complemented by 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, which can be expand with microSD cards (another 64 GB). . From myself I will say that in reality the smartphone works quickly. All the applications that I use on a regular basis worked without failures. A fairly productive platform and a display resolution of 960x540 pixels play into the hands of the S4 Mini. The only thing that surprises is 1.5 GB of RAM. The difference in price from 2 GB is minimal, so I would attribute the company's decision to use a smaller volume either to a marketing strategy, or to the fact that there were simply not enough modules of a larger volume.

wear resistance

As I already wrote, Galaxy case S4 Mini is almost completely made of plastic, so over time, small scratches begin to appear on its surface. To Samsung's credit, it's worth noting that the lacquer coating on the back cover is steadfast at first, but its strength, unfortunately, is not enough to protect the plastic. In addition, since the camera window protrudes slightly from the body, protective glass scratches may also appear. The situation is better with the front panel, it is covered with tempered glass, which is more difficult to scratch. As a result, most of all goes to the mechanical “Home” key, which, when pressed, is easy to touch with a fingernail. Based on all this, I would advise not very careful users to look at the S4 Mini case.

Display and multimedia capabilities

The S4 Mini has a 4.3-inch SuperAMOLED touch screen with a resolution of 960x540 pixels.

Like any other AMOLED display, it stands out with bright colors and near-reference blacks. If the colors seem too bright, they can be muted a little by switching to the "Professional Photo" display mode in the settings.

As for me, in this mode, the color reproduction looks more natural. If we talk about resolution, as well as a density of 256 dpi, then I can not say that the screen seemed grainy to me. On the contrary, individual pixels on it can be seen only if the display is brought very close to the eyes. In the sun, the screen of the S4 Mini is almost always readable, although this is highly dependent on the angle at which the light falls on it. IN individual cases, besides its reflection, it will be difficult to see anything else on the display.

In terms of usability and responsiveness, as I wrote above, the 4.3-inch display is easy to operate with one hand, while still being large enough to display text normally even without magnification. This also applies to reading books, the screen is quite suitable for this. Watching videos on the 4.3-inch display is still comfortable. The built-in media player quietly plays video in .mkv format, while the device pulls out files in both 720p and Full HD resolution.

Among other multimedia features, I also used the built-in music player. I won't say what it is handy application, for listening to music, but it copes with its tasks.

The media player can sort tracks by files, artists and albums. Of the non-standard features, I would single out only the function automatic creation playlist, depending on the mood. In general, the S4 Mini sounds good and on default settings, but you can make it even better by digging into the equalizer and activating the Adapt Sound function.

The latter offers to pass a simple test to adjust the sound of the headphones. At first, the sound with this add-on seems unusual, but when you turn it off, you realize that it really was a little better with it.

Although the S4 Mini has a built-in radio with automatic search radio stations and the ability to add them to favorites, I never found a use for it. The radio can record sound from the air, but its quality leaves much to be desired.

Camera

The S4 Mini uses an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash. Subjectively, this photomodule resembles the one installed in S4 Active. At least they have the same f / 2.6 aperture and the photo quality is generally on the same level. The detail of the picture depends on the lighting, and drops when it deteriorates.

Opinion

Anna Boyko, PR Manager, ABBYY Ukraine

WITH simple smartphones I switched to Symbian for a long time straight to iOS, so I am very familiar with the Android mobile OS. Yes, and Samsung phones took only "twist in their hands." Therefore, the offer to use the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini phone for a week seemed very interesting. It is necessary, finally, to make up your mind about the platform and phones that so many people use.

Let's start with the phone. As a girl, I, of course, first of all liked the appearance of the device. Slim, stylish, light phone, nothing creaks, it's nice to hold in your hand. The machine itself is larger than mine, and this fact has both advantages and disadvantages. First, he has bigger screen, therefore, reading a book (due to the breakdown of the electronic one) was a real pleasure, as, by the way, and viewing the news or social media, watch the video.

On the other hand, the phone seemed too wide for one-handed use. Perhaps the reason is that in a week you don’t have time to get used to the new dimensions - I saw a lot of girls and with Galaxy Note and it will be bigger. However, often it was necessary to strain the hand unnaturally, because of which the touch buttons were accidentally pressed every now and then. By the way, they are very sensitive.

I constantly listened to the radio on the phone - it is not on my device, which I personally lack. I also liked the camera - it copes well with standard tasks, that is, even on trips, I would probably often replace the camera.

But the behavior of the screen in the sun leaves much to be desired - I had to cover it with my hand to see who was calling.

Regarding the autonomy of the device, I did not notice any discomfort. I used to charge my phone once a day, and I didn't have to change my habits. During the day, the battery was discharged somewhere up to half.

As for the operating system itself, then, as they say, there are nuances. I had to tinker with the settings, there are too many of them, several times I even had to feel the superiority of the system over myself. After all, even such a seemingly banal task as setting an alarm clock (which, in my opinion, should be as simple as possible) requires an excessive amount of body movements and reflections. As a result, on the first morning with the phone, I overslept - he outwitted me.

However, this is rather an unfortunate exception, because in general I found Android to be a very friendly and pleasant system, although it took some digging to understand how some things work. Firstly, word hints during typing are just a godsend. I write mostly in Ukrainian and, of course, the letters are often confused on the phone. But if my phone decides on its own to replace a word (often correctly spelled with another one), then here, hint words are displayed above the keyboard, which are very easy to use. I also liked Swype for typing short words. The convenience of typing is very important to me, because at least several times a day I have to answer letters from the phone.

Work with mail is also conveniently organized. On the phone, I used clients for personal Gmail and working Outlook. In the latter, even photos of colleagues from the system were pulled up, as on a PC.

The phone has long since replaced the usual voice recorder for me, and it was also pleasant and convenient to work with it. The same can be said about navigation (“Yandex.Maps”, Google Maps), sports (Runkeeper), reading (FBReader), translation (Lingvo), social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare), browser and so on. And the correspondence in facebook messenger in general, it is perfectly implemented: it is very convenient to continue communication, reading Twitter or viewing photos on Instagram, thanks to the Chat Heads function.

Special thanks to the developers for the widgets. In a week, I got so used to them that it seemed that they were in my phone. Well, now I really want to be ...

In general, the device is good, and Android is not as scary as it is painted. He coped with work and personal tasks perfectly.

Settings and useful programs

Works S4 Mini under Android control 4.2.2 with the latest edition of the TouchWiz add-on. The latter has both useful Android improvements and programs that I would like to remove, but cannot. At least not without extra effort. Fortunately, unnecessary software can be hidden. This is done in the settings in the "Programs" menu.

An unnecessary application remains on the phone, but disappears from the menu and does not take up RAM. Accordingly, you cannot turn off the programs you need for Android or the interface.

Recently, manufacturers have started adding to the Android notification bar various settings, while for some companies this process went so well that now, due to the number of settings, notifications are not visible. Samsung has been smart in this regard. By default, the notification panel displays one row of settings and a brightness adjustment menu, which can be turned off. The settings can be scrolled to the right, or you can click the button in the panel, which will display them all. This menu is also called up by swiping down with two fingers from the top edge.

Unlike the S4, which uses a lot of gestures, the Mini can't scroll through the screen with a glance, nor can it pause the video when the user looks away. However, one can talk about the usefulness of these functions for a very long time, but the main gestures of the S4 Mini are still left. The smartphone does not turn off the screen while you look at it.

It does not always work correctly, especially in poor lighting, but in general it works.

Among other useful gestures, I would single out:

"Direct call" - the ability to call a contact from the call log, address book or SMS, simply by bringing the smartphone to your ear;

Mute/Pause - Ringtones, notifications, and media files are muted when the phone is turned over and placed face down.

On Android, I use a variety of applications, I will talk about some of them.

After several attempts to use Evernote, I switched to Google Keep, which I do not regret so far. The application works quickly, saves notes offline, there is synchronization with the web service. And most importantly, it is very simple, since Evernote has recently turned into a real monster.

For running I use Runkeeper, the program allows you to monitor the distance, average speed and pace, which is important while jogging. But most importantly, it has training plans that are designed to achieve various results, from losing weight to running a marathon. This application also has glitches, but in general, today it is one of best solutions for those who love running.

What I don’t have time to immediately read on the Internet, and this is a lot, I immediately send to Pocket. This program + service stores articles and allows you to read them in a convenient format. I tried Instapaper, Readability and other delayed reading apps and services, but in the end I came to the conclusion that Pocket is the best for this task.

Recently, Yahoo! a new weather application has been released, it looks very nice, the background photos that are pulled up from Flickr and change depending on the city are especially pleasing.

I really like the idea of using a smartphone as a TV remote control.

Firstly, it is convenient, and secondly, there is no need to find the TV remote control.

Connection

My version of the S4 Mini had two Micro SIM slots, although 90% used one. Therefore, I can say for sure only about two scenarios for working with two numbers. The first of these involves the use of working and personal SIM card, while calls can be received simultaneously from two numbers. The second allows you to call from one SIM-card, and use the Internet from the second. To do this, you can set priorities in the settings, which network is used for voice transmission, and which one for data.

The voice quality of the S4 Mini is at the level of the latest Samsung devices, it can be called high quality. The noise reduction system during calls works, but not very aggressively, in a noisy environment it is a little lacking.

autonomy

The battery in the S4 Mini has a capacity of 1900 mAh - which is pretty decent for such a smartphone, especially considering that the Galaxy SII had a 1650 mAh battery.

Even with a load above the average, the Mini works quietly for a day, in a more gentle mode it lasts for a day and a half.

Eventually

It is customary to talk about smartphones in the “mini” category as “reduced copies of flagships”, but often this only applies to design. If we talk about the S4 Mini, then in terms of hardware, it generally has little in common with the S4. But is it really that bad? Not really. If you break away from the discussion of megahertz, gigabytes, megapixels, and concentrate on general impressions, you can get a self-sufficient medium format smartphone. It does not have any unique features, this can be regarded as a drawback, but we can say that there is nothing superfluous in it. And it is worth remembering that despite the Mini prefix, it is still an Android smartphone with all the ensuing capabilities.
