Hello friends!

Do you use an MFP in your work? Do you know what it is?

The MFP is a multifunction device. Let's take a closer look at these smart machines! They contain most often three devices - a printer, a scanner and a copier "in one bottle."

About ten or fifteen years ago, the printer, scanner and copier were installed in offices as separate devices. Something was used more often (a printer, for example), something less often. These things took up a lot of space on the desktop.

The idea to combine the necessary devices in one was in the air.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the fax (telefax, phototelegraph in the old way) was also actively used for transmission over telephone networks documents to the subscriber. In the MFP they also wanted to shove it.

Bright engineering heads wiped sweat from their foreheads and gave out a crowd of hybrids in the most bizarre combinations.

Print technologies used in MFPs

The MFP contains a printer that uses printing technologies that have been worked out to near perfection. Most often applied jet And laser seal.

Inkjet printing in MFP

At inkjet printing the image is obtained from the smallest color droplets ejected from the nozzles of the print head. The diameter of the nozzles is thinner than a human hair, the number of nozzles of the print head or cartridge can reach several hundred.

The droplet volume has now been reduced to units of picolitres (10‾¹² l).

This is a microscopic value, ant spit!

The smaller the droplet, the more accurately the colors and borders of the image are transmitted.

Four colors of ink are most commonly used: black (black), yellow (yellow), magenta (magenta), blue (cyan).

Inkjet printing combines two fundamentally different - thermal jet And piezoelectric.

In thermal inkjet printing, each nozzle contains a miniature resistive heater.

When a current pulse is applied to the heater, it almost instantly heats up to several hundred degrees.

The resulting steam pushes a drop of ink out of the nozzle, and a new portion of ink enters the nozzle chamber.

The nozzle chamber in the piezoelectric printhead contains a piezoelectric element. When a current pulse is applied to the piezoelectric element, it bends towards the chamber. Its volume decreases, and a drop of ink is pushed out of the nozzle.

Epson uses piezoelectric technology, Hewlett Packard and Canon use thermal inkjet technology.

Laser printing in MFP

In laser printing, the image is recorded on a photosensitive drum by means of a very thin laser beam.

The principle of operation of laser printing is similar to that used in old cathode ray tubes. In them, a focused electron flow periodically bypassed all points (image elements), illuminating the necessary ones.

In the initial state, the surface of the photoconductor is charged with a uniform charge.

When submitting a print job, the laser beam periodically moves from one end of the drum to the other by means of a mirror scanning system, forming an image line. The intensity of the beam changes according to the brightness of the image elements in the job.

The place where the beam shone loses its charge. The charge of the place where the beam did not hit remains unchanged.

The recording process is repeated periodically, line by line, over the entire surface of the photoconductor. The photodrum usually has a small diameter, and only part of the image is recorded in one revolution.

The photoreceptor drum then passes its charged surface over a magnetic roller which is covered with toner. Toner is the smallest polymer granules containing metallic inclusions. These inclusions hold the toner on the magnetic roller.

The magnetic toner roller has the same amount of charge as the photoconductor in its original state. Therefore, upon contact, the toner sticks due to the difference in charges only in those places on the surface of the photoconductor where the beam shone.

Then the photoreceptor drum with the stuck tuner comes into contact with a sheet of paper. On the other side of the sheet is pressed charge transfer shaft(corotron), which, due to the difference in charges, pulls the toner from the drum onto the paper.

After that, a sheet of paper with adhered toner is fed into fixing block(furnace), where it is heated to the melting temperature of the toner. The toner melts and adheres to the fibers of the paper, forming a stable image.

There is a variety of laser printing - LED.

In this case, instead of a single laser emitter and a scanning system, a line of miniature LED emitters is used. One of the leaders in LED technology is OKI.

Solid ink printing in a XEROX MFP

Some Xerox products use solid ink printing technology developed by Tektronix. It uses solid ink, a cross between wax and plasticine, which looks like colored bars.

In an MFP, ink is melted and fed into the print head.

The print head of solid ink printing is similar to the print head inkjet printer. But, unlike it, it is motionless, and occupies the entire width of the page.

The piezoelectric technology already familiar to us is used.

The ink from the print head falls onto a heated metal drum, from which it is transferred to paper, where it instantly solidifies. This technology reduces the cost of color printing.

The image is transferred to paper (or other media) in one revolution of the transfer roller.

Performance and monthly resource of the MFP

Modern MFPs, depending on the class, may have different performance.

Small A4 desktop models tend to have lower capacity, large A3 floor models have more.

For example, the Xerox WorkCentre 6025BI laser MFP prints 10 ppm, while the Xerox WorkCentre 7855 prints 50 ppm.

It should be noted that this maximum numbers. Marketing stuff has not been canceled!

Laser printers can print with different resolution. At higher resolutions, the print speed slows down. It takes more time to write the image to the photoconductor.

In inkjet devices, color printing can be done with different quality. For high-quality (photographic) printing, the speed may decrease factor of. In this case, the print head passes over the print area several times. And it uses more ink!

Each MFP model is positioned for a specific monthly resource.

Depending on the model, it can range from 10 to 200 or more thousand copies per month. Large A3 format combines have a much longer resource than small A4 desktop MFPs.

For example, the laser MFP Xerox WorkCentre 3025BI has a monthly resource of 15 thousand copies, Xerox WorkCentre 7885 - 300 thousand copies.

Smart functions and reliability of the MFP

Modern technology has become much smarter than 10-15 years ago. Qualitative and quantitative characteristics have increased, new functions have appeared. The MFP is a masterpiece of engineering and design!

The intelligence of multifunctional devices allows them to read and remember. An ordinary user does not really need this, but a service engineer needs it.

The MFP counts, in particular, how many copies and what format it printed, how many it scanned and copied. When leasing such complex equipment, it is convenient to pay according to the number of copies.

The multifunction device remembers errors - paper jams in its various parts.

The MFP counts and remembers the resource of the cartridge, photoconductor, and curing unit. Complex and expensive high-performance devices take into account a lot of different parameters!

The MFP, like any technology, is not designed for endless operation.

The service manual indicates the resource in copies or the period of work in years that the device must work out. Or they can indicate the service life of its individual parts.

The matter, however, is complicated by the fact that some users treat complex technology without love and maliciously stick paper with paper clips there. If the MFP could speak, it would remember such professionals with a "kindly quiet word."

The resource of individual parts of the MFP

Separate parts of the MFP are designed for a much smaller resource, and must be replaced during operation.

So, for example, in the service manual for the Xerox 3635 it is written in black and white:

  • tray 1 pickup roller life - 150,000 pickups,
  • transfer roller life - 100 thousand prints,
  • fuser (furnace) service life - 100 thousand prints

The photoreceptor drum has an average resource of 10-20 thousand copies. Over time, its surface wears out, and the image becomes increasingly pale.

The fixing block (stove) can have a resource of 100 - 300 thousand copies. Consumables serve even less: cartridges for laser printing - several thousand copies (or even 1.5 - 2), for inkjet printing - even less.

Many MFP models, especially high-performance ones, allow you to control the resource of the photoreceptor, fusing unit and cartridge during operation. Users see on the display of the device that the resource of the cartridge, photoreceptor and stove is decreasing, and they take care of the replacement in a timely manner.

Finishing the first part, we note that some MFPs have one unpleasant feature - the so-called hard stop(work lock).

If the cartridge runs out of toner, the MFP cannot physically print - and everything is clear here. But there are situations when the resource of the photoreceptor ends, but it can still work. Although with the worst quality.

However, a soulless chip in the photoreceptor block tells the printer that the resource has been exhausted, and the electronic brain blocks further work, dumbfounding the user.

But it is not all that bad. In some cases, this counter can be reset and still work.

To be continued.

What is the difference between an MFP and a printer or scanner? Why does someone buy a fax, scanner, printer, copier for a small office, and someone prefers to buy a multifunctional MFP device? The abundance of representatives of technology for printing, scanning, copying documents can lead to a dead end for any budding entrepreneur. Indeed, at the beginning of the development of your business, it is necessary to provide for many nuances, plus to choose the equipment for work. At the same time, it is important to purchase high-quality devices with a long service life, but also save as much as possible. In order to determine which of the devices is better to purchase for the office, let's look at the main characteristics and functions of the MFP and printer.

A printer is a device designed to print text and graphic objects. According to the printing method, printers are:

  • color - have a palette of three or more colors for displaying images in color on paper;
  • black and white - devices designed for monochrome printing.

Depending on the method of applying an imprint on paper, the following types of printing devices are distinguished:

  • inkjet - when printing, a print head is used with the supply of liquid ink through a special nozzle;
  • laser - a laser beam is used to transfer text and images;
  • thermal sublimation - with this type of printing, a crystalline dye is used, which, under the influence of high temperatures, goes into a gaseous state, and then transferred to paper.

Printers are used both for printing ordinary text documents so for printing promotional booklets, envelopes, business cards or photos.

Multifunction devices and their main features

MFP is a device that combines the functions of several units, such as fax, scanner, printer, copier. Moreover, different devices can be endowed with all of the listed functions at the same time or combine only two or three. Yes, most simple models combine only the properties of a printing device and a scanner.

According to the method of printing, MFPs are divided into:

  • laser - devices that are characterized by high-speed printing in combination with good quality are widely used in organizations;
  • LED or thermal sublimation are expensive, productive units that are most often purchased by professional advertising agencies and photo salons. Thanks to the special technology of imprinting, the highest quality is achieved when printing images;
  • inkjet - these devices provide excellent quality when printing graphics and photos, due to which they are widely used in photo salons.

And also there are devices for color, black and white printing of documents or copies.

The multifunctional device, when used in the office and at home, gives users a number of advantages such as:

  1. Convenience of accommodation. Due to its small dimensions, it does not take up much space in the room. Even in a small room, it is much easier to place one appliance instead of three different ones.
  2. Saving materials. Thanks to the combination of several devices in one, the user does not have to buy three different cartridges for a copier or printer scanner, but it will be enough to buy one for an MFP.
  3. Low cost of the device. Even if you purchase an MFP with advanced functionality, the amount spent on this unit will still be less than the amount needed to purchase three different devices.

In addition to the obvious advantages for multifunctional devices, there are also disadvantages:

  • if one of the components of such a device fails, the office or user loses several devices at once;
  • slow copy speed.

Similarities and differences between MFP and printer

Let's determine how the MFP differs from the printer, for this you need to comparative analysis functions, characteristics of these two devices.

Let's define the similarities of a multifunctional device with a printer:

  1. Printers and MFPs have the same methods of applying print to paper. Both multifunction devices and printers are inkjet, laser or LED.
  2. Both MFPs and printers provide the ability to print color or black and white texts or images.
  3. These two devices use ink cartridges as consumables for jet types, or with toner powder for laser. For LED or sublimation representatives of these devices, toner is used in the form of crystals.
  4. Both devices can be connected both to a computer via USB or special ports, and via a network connection.
  5. These units can be used to print photos.
  6. For MFP and printer one of important features is the print resolution, which is measured in dots per inch. To get a good photo or graphic when printing, you need to purchase a device with a large expansion.
  7. Depending on the printing methods, different types of MFPs, like a printer, have different print speeds. Print speed is measured in terms of pages printed per minute.

There are many similarities between a multifunctional device and a printer, but there are also significant differences. The most important distinguishing feature of the MFP is that in addition to outputting text or graphic objects to print, this device is able to scan a document, make a photocopy or receive / send a document by fax. What no printer can do, except for printing a document. Therefore, when choosing a multifunctional device, in addition to the requirements for a printing device, it is important to pay attention to its characteristics as a scanner, fax, and copier. For example, the quality of a scanned copy of a document will depend on the extension of the scanning fixture. For the office, it is better to purchase multifunctional devices with a scanner extension from 2400 dpi.

Which is better - MFP or printer

MFP or printer - it is impossible to say for sure which is better for the office or for the home. It all depends on the purpose for which the type of this or that device is acquired. If the user is the owner of a small office, then it is more expedient to purchase a device that combines the functions of several office equipment devices, this will save cash. The compact placement of this device is also important, since one device will take up much less space in the room than three or four different units. For users working from home, purchasing an MFP will be a worthwhile investment. Moreover, the multifunction device with scanner and copier functionality will also be useful for students and family members. In cases where from time to time you only need to print documents, photos, it is better to purchase a regular laser or inkjet printer.

Sergey Asmakov

In early October, HP introduced new models of laser printers and MFPs in Russia.

First of all, it is worth reminding readers that since the second half of this year, HP has changed the principle of model numbering, adding to the product numbers letter indices. To make it easier to navigate the new numbering, the table below shows the decoding of the indices related to laser printers and MFPs.

The parade of novelties is opened by monochrome models of A4 format. Printer HP LaserJet P2015, which replaced the previously produced LaserJet 1320, has a higher productivity (up to 26 ppm), is equipped with more powerful processor and comes with RAM increased to 32 MB (upgradable to 288 MB if needed). The manual feed tray in the new model can be used for both single and automatic download media (it holds up to 50 sheets). The printer supports HP PCL6 and PCL5e page description languages, as well as PostScript Level 3. Maximum load devices increased to 15 thousand pages per month. In addition to the base model, modifications P2015d, P2015n, P2015dn and P2015x will be supplied (the letter d means the presence of an automatic two-sided printing device, n - network adapter, t - one or more optional media input trays. The letter x denotes a set of several additional components (in this case-dtn)).

LaserJet P2015 owners will be able to purchase two types of toner cartridges - with a resource of 3 and 7 thousand pages. It is noteworthy that the recommended price of the HP LaserJet P2015 will not exceed the cost of the Laser Jet 1320 model.

The model replaces the previously released LaserJet 2420 and 2430. The maximum print speed of the novelty is 33 ppm, and the first page out time is reduced to 9.5 s. The capacity of the automatic feed tray has been increased to 500 sheets. A USB interface and an IEEE-1284 parallel port are available for connecting to a PC. The printer is equipped with a built-in network adapter (in modifications P3005n, P3005dn and P3005x); in addition, there is one free EIO slot for installing expansion cards with additional interfaces. The maximum monthly load is 100,000 pages. For this model, two types of toner cartridges will be supplied with a resource of 6.5 and 13 thousand pages. In addition to the base model, modifications P3005d, P3005n, P3005dn and P3005x will be on sale.

The new color laser printer is designed for use in small and medium business workgroups. It is equally well suited for both everyday office needs (printing reports, letters, handouts) and tasks that require higher quality color printing, such as business cards, invitations, presentation materials, etc.

The maximum print speed is 30ppm monochrome and 25ppm color. To provide High Quality Printing uses ImageREt 3600 technology, and its use does not affect the performance of the printer. The amount of RAM in the basic configuration is 160 MB (expandable up to 512 MB). A 500-sheet cassette is available for media supply, as well as a multi-purpose tray that can be used to load heavier media (up to 220 g/m2). A multifunctional peripheral device (MFP) is a mini-office that combines several of the following devices (two or more): printer, copier, scanner, telephone and fax. It is the optimal solution for a home or small office, allowing rational use of the available space.

Currently, MFPs are produced in two types:

  1. Laser
  2. Inkjet
The main difference between inkjet and laser devices is the principle of operation. In laser MFPs, paper is rolled between two rollers, during which the image is transferred to it. In inkjet MFPs, ink is applied to paper through special nozzles. There are merits and demerits both there and there. For example, a document printed on an inkjet MFP is more sensitive to water. But when printing color images and photos laser printing loses inkjet. Colors mix worse, there are not as many shades as with inkjet printing. Therefore, all good and well-known photo printers are inkjet. In addition, color laser MFPs are much more expensive than their inkjet counterparts.
When choosing between an inkjet and laser MFP with black and white printing, the main selection criteria include the frequency of use. In the case of frequent use of technology, inkjet MFPs can also be considered. If the device is needed from time to time, then it is better to opt for a laser one. In inkjet models, the ink dries up if you don't print at least once a week. The laser MFP will last much longer.
We also consider such a parameter as the cost of 1 copy. When printing a large number of documents, it is more profitable to take a laser MFP, since their cartridges are designed for a much larger number of printouts than cartridges for inkjet devices, which ultimately makes printing one document on laser technology cheaper than on inkjet.
If your choice fell on laser MFPs, but you still find it difficult to make a final decision, then this article is for you.

The principle of operation of the laser MFP

Laser devices got their name thanks, of course, to the laser. It is he who transfers the image to paper. Using a laser and static electricity, a special powder is applied to the photosensitive drum, consisting of very small polymer granules (toner). Moreover, the toner falls on the drum already in the form of a given pattern (this is achieved due to the charge difference). From there, the powder is imprinted on paper and, under the influence of high temperature (about 200 0 C), is fused into it.
Therefore, you should carefully print images on film on such a device. Make sure the film is suitable for the laser MFP and will not warp when exposed to high temperatures.
The price range of laser MFPs is very large, therefore, in order to choose the most suitable one, you need to decide which functions of this technique you will use most often. The price of the MFP and its completeness depend on this.

The MFP can combine the following devices:

  • copier
Considering the devices you need as part of an MFP, pay attention to the following characteristics that can help you both in choosing a particular model and in further work with the equipment.

Interface

Ways to connect to the data source (from where the printed image is taken) in different models MFPs are different. Traditional - connecting the MFP directly to the computer using a cable. For offices where several PCs are networked, an Ethernet (RJ-45) connection is very important, allowing documents to be sent to the MFP from the entire office network. The presence of a USB input makes it possible to print documents from a flash drive or from another device via a USB cable. And the ability to connect wireless network Wi-Fi allows you to print a document without the use of cables and networks. This allows you to put the MFP in any convenient place.

Maximum Format

This setting refers to the maximum paper size on which specific model The MFP can print, copy and scan.
If you only need to work with A4 sheets (the standard paper size for printing), then it makes no sense to look at devices that can, for example, print A3 sheets (twice as large as A4), which are also more expensive.

Print speed

If you need to print a lot and quickly, then you should pay attention to the print speed. Print speed is measured in sheets printed per minute. The print speed is affected by the size of the sheet as well as the color. For example, the speed of black and white and color printing in the same MFP may differ. The minimum print speed for A4 sheet black and white is 12 ppm , and color is only 4 ppm .
For home use, a technique with a low printing speed is quite suitable. After all, even if you need to print a lot of sheets, an extra couple of minutes will not do the weather. This is not a dot matrix printer, which is one coursework I could print several hours, and my thesis - more than a day. Well, if documents are printed in large batches, for example, in the accounting department or the contract department, when every minute is the last, you should choose an MFP with a print speed of 50-60 ppm .

Number of pages per month

Another characteristic follows from the previous characteristic, which may affect the choice of device. This is the number of pages per month. The correct determination of the output of pages per month will ensure the correct and reliable operation of the equipment for a longer period. After all, the details in the MFP are designed for a certain number of pages. And if you decide to save money and buy an MFP with the ability to print, for example, 10,000 pages, while you actually print three times more, then the device simply cannot withstand such constant loads and will fail much earlier than the period declared by the manufacturer. On the other hand, it makes no sense to spend extra money on an MFP with the ability to print 200,000 pages per month if your need is limited to 15,000 - 30,000 pages .

Automatic duplex printing

Some MFP models support features such as automatic two-sided printing . This setting can be useful when saving paper or printing brochures, booklets, and similar documents.

First print out time

This parameter is measured in seconds. It is different for black-and-white and color printouts and shows how much time will pass from the moment the document is sent for printing until the paper with the image comes out of the printer. So, for a color printer, the minimum output time is 6.9-9.8 seconds ., the average is about 16 seconds ., the long one is 26-28 seconds .

Copier speed

A parameter that may be of interest to those who copy a lot.
  • The minimum speed is up to 15 ppm .
  • Average speed - 15-40 ppm .
  • High speed - 40 to 60 ppm
You can buy an MFP at home with a low copying speed, but, for example, for a library that provides copying services, it is better to choose a model with maximum speed.

Maximum Resolution

This characteristic affects the quality of the image obtained during the operation of the MFP. Resolution refers to the number of displayed dots per inch. The more dots per inch, the higher the resolution, and the better and more accurate print you will get in the end. There is a maximum resolution for different devices combined into MFPs:
  • maximum print resolution. When printing text, this parameter is not as important as, for example, when printing graphs and drawings. For normal work, a resolution of 600x600 dpi , 1200x1200 or 1200x600 dpi is enough. For a more accurate image, a resolution of 2400x600 or 2400x1200 dpi is suitable. The maximum possible resolution is 4800x600 , 9600x600 dpi . In color printers, there is also a resolution of 3600x3600 dpi.
  • maximum copier resolution. Affects the quality of the resulting copy. In laser MFPs, the maximum resolution of the copier depends on the resolution of the printer. The higher it is for the printer, the higher it will be for the copier.
  • the maximum resolution of the scanner. When considering the parameters of the scanner, they first of all look at the optical resolution. For normal work, a resolution of , or 1200 dpi will suffice. For professional work with images and graphics, it is recommended to consider scanners with a resolution of 2400x1200 and 4800x4800 dpi.

Autofeeder

A very handy feature when you need to scan or copy a lot. Just put a stack of documents in the auto-feed tray and you can do other things. And the MFP will independently take one sheet at a time and send it to work. In this case, automatic feeders can be single-sided or double-sided. The capacity of such a device in different models is different.

Noise level

The noise level during MFP operation, as well as in standby mode, is also an important factor to consider when choosing equipment for home use. For a home, a device with a minimum noise level is more appropriate. For example, up to 15 dB in standby mode and up to 50 dB in operation. For office work, this is not so critical. Although there are options here. So, if the equipment is in the corridor, then the noise does not really bother anyone. And if, for example, near the dispatcher or manager, constantly talking on the phone, then quiet technology is preferable.

Power consumption

Energy costs are often high, especially in offices. Therefore, the less electricity the equipment consumes during operation or in standby mode, the more profitable it is. Most modern MFPs have power consumption

The time has long passed when a multifunctional device combined the capabilities of only a printer, copier and scanner and was intended exclusively for office use. Today on sale are designs suitable for home installation. With the help of the MFP, you can translate e-book in an ordinary paper format, print a photo, a postcard, and so on. There are a lot of equipment models on the market, so it’s easy to get confused in them.

All MFPs are divided into inkjet and laser.

The former are much cheaper, provide high-resolution printing, have simple design making them easier to use. However, they have a high cost per print, the ink is consumed quickly and dries when the device is idle for a long time. A set of cartridges is cheap, but they will have to be refilled often, and you can do it yourself.

Laser MFPs print much faster, and one print is much cheaper due to low toner consumption, but they themselves are more expensive. They are suitable if there is a need to print large volumes of images. Cartridges are quite expensive, but refilling is cheap, it is done less frequently than on inkjet MFPs.

An important role in the choice is played by the price of the device, the cost of maintenance and other costs associated with its operation. In addition, you should pay attention to a number of points in order to work with the device as conveniently as possible:

  • You should check whether the MFP can be used in a network format;
  • Possibility of sending the scanned image by e-mail;
  • The presence of USB ports for working with removable drives, however, some devices are not compatible with all file systems;
  • Telephony functions that allow you to make calls, send a fax;
  • Appearance of the device.

When compiling the ranking of the best MFPs in 2019, we took into account all these indicators. In addition, we analyzed customer reviews, the ratio of devices for price and quality. We hope our rating will help you choose the most suitable equipment for home or office use.
