If a mismatch is found, the server identifies the connection attempt as insecure and blocks it.

In this case, you need to set the correct parameters, but you just need to do this not through the settings of the operating system, but through the BIOS, followed by a reboot of the computer terminal or laptop.

We update the operating system

Sometimes the problem of SSL connection failures can be that the system does not have Latest updates.

True, for the most part this applies to Windows XP with the mandatory installation of Service Pack 3. Installing the appropriate update in many cases solves the problem.

Disable antivirus scan

Quite often there is a problem that consists in blocking an SSL connection by antivirus packages. In most cases, this is characteristic of the Eset Smart Security package, starting from the fifth version.

To fix the problem, it is recommended to disable HTTPS and SSL checking in the antivirus, and also use the exclusion list to add a browser application to it. In other antiviruses, this situation can also occur. In general, the output is the same.

The exclusion list is also useful when changing firewall settings. This mainly concerns the appearance of the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error in Google services, itself search engine or even a browser.

As it is already clear, you need to go to the security settings and add the corresponding Internet application to the list of allowed nodes. In addition, it is in no way connected with the malfunctions of the “OS” itself. As you probably already figured out, the problem is related to problems with the SSL communication between your computers and the HTTPS site. The reasons for this error can be quite different. In this article, I tried to collect all the methods for fixing the error "This site cannot provide a secure connection" (This site can't provide a secure connection, ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR) in various browsers.

I want to point out right away that despite the fact that Google browsers Chrome, Opera and Yandex Browser are produced by different companies, in fact, all these browsers are based on the same engine - Chrome, and the problem with errors in opening HTTPS sites is solved in them in the same way.

First of all, you need to make sure that the problem is not on the side of the HTTPS site itself. Try opening it from other devices (phone, tablet, home/work computer, etc.). Also check if it opens in other browsers like IE/Edge or Mozilla Firefox. In Firefox, a similar error was discussed in the article.

Clear browser cache and cookies, SSL cache

Browser cache and cookies can be a common cause of errors with SSL certificates. We recommend that you first clear the cache and cookies in your browser. In Chrome, you need to press a keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Delete, select a period of time ( All the time) and click the clear data button ( Delete data/cleardata).

To clear the SSL cache on Windows:

  1. Go to section Control Panel -> Browser Properties;
  2. Click on the tab Content;
  3. Click on the button Clear SSL (Clear SSL State);
  4. The message “SSL cache cleared successfully” should appear;

Disable third-party browser extensions

We recommend disabling (removing) third-party browser extensions, especially any anonymizers, proxies, VPNs, antivirus extensions, and other similar Addons that can interfere with traffic to the target site. Check your antivirus and firewall settings

Check if Chrome has protocol support enabled QUIC(Quick UDP Internet Connections). The QUIC protocol allows you to open a connection much faster and negotiate all TLS (HTTPs) parameters when connecting to a site. However, in some cases it can cause problems with SSL connections. Try disabling QUIC:

  1. Go to page: chrome://flags/#enable-quic;
  2. Find an option Experimental QUIC protocol;
  3. Change the value of the Default option to Disabled;
  4. Restart Chrome.

Enable support for TLS and SSL protocols

And the very last point - most likely, to solve the problem, it will be enough for you to enable support for older versions of the TLS and SSL protocols. In most cases, it will be the most effective, but I deliberately moved it to the end of the article. I'll explain why.

The old versions of the TLS and SSL protocols are disabled not at the mere whim of the developers, but due to the presence a large number vulnerabilities that allow attackers to intercept your data in HTTPS traffic and even modify it. Thoughtlessly turning on old protocols significantly reduces your security on the Internet, so this method should be resorted to as a last resort, if everything else has definitely not helped.

Modern browsers and operating systems have long since abandoned support for the legacy and vulnerable SSL/TLS protocols (SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.1). TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are now considered standard
