Alternative registry editors are not common, so I could not pass by Reg. This program can replace the standard Windows Registry Editor, as it has some features that are not available in other programs.

Interface Reg ascetic, migrated from the last century, however, the standard registry editor does not differ in fashionable design. Despite this, the program has everything for working with the registry: you can import registry settings and export them as REG files, copy the full path to the registry entry to the clipboard, quickly search for settings, search and replace them, open them with one click and expand record branches. You can do this not only with the help of the manipulator, but also with the help of hot keys.

One of useful features programs Reg is a quick jump to a specific entry in the registry - by entering the path, you get to the section, and the tree of entries will be open up to it. This is much faster than moving sequentially through sections to the desired entry, especially if you use the setup instructions: copy the full path to the entry from it, paste it in a special program window, and instantly move to the desired section.

Well, the most convenient function Reg is the ability to add bookmarks. if you want to remember where certain settings are stored so that you can quickly access them in the future, then simply bookmark the current location and give it an arbitrary name. In this way, you can make a list of your favorite places in the registry, which can be quickly accessed with two clicks.

Reg does not differ much in design from the regular registry editor, but fast moving to the desired entry and bookmarks make it more convenient for frequent editing. The program is distributed free of charge open source, works in 32/64-bit Windows versions XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Of course, you need to have administrator rights to run the program.

Windows users may have heard about such a system component as the registry, but did not fully know its purpose and application. The registry editor of Windows 10 and other versions is the main tool for working with basic parameters and system settings. In this article, we will try to answer the questions of interest to users:

What is a registry? Basic functions and commands

The registry is a tree-like database of all Windows settings. Keeps in system settings, information about equipment, users of the system, installed applications and other settings and configurations. It, in turn, is very convenient because the system stores all the necessary information in one place, without the need to create individual files configuration for each item of system settings. Each parameter is strictly in its place, and even on a different computer or system it will not be difficult to find the desired branch - the order is strictly ordered.

The downside is the “fragility” of the entire system. Removing or changing a single setting or branch can lead to bugs, failures, and crashes. Sometimes, it can reach BSODs and a complete failure to boot the system.
There are 5 main sections:

Having a tree-like appearance, subsections are most commonly referred to as "branches". Branches, in turn, contain parameters that are divided into several types:

  • String parameter (REG_SZ) - text format. May refer to file hard drive, application, site, or other setting that cannot be specified with a numeric value.
  • Binary parameter (REG_BINARY) - specified in binary code format (0 or 1). It is output in hexadecimal format.
  • DWORD (REG_DWORD) - stores an integer up to 32 bits (4294967295).
  • QWORD (REG_QWORD) - stores an integer up to 64 bits (18446744073709551615).

There is also an expandable data string (REG_EXPAND_SZ), a multiline parameter (REG_MULTI_SZ) and others, but we will not focus on them.

How to call the registry editor in Windows 10

The editor (Regedit) on almost all Windows systems starts the same way. To call the registry editor, open the Run window (Win + R) and enter the regedit command. launch this application requires administrator rights.

How to edit the registry in Windows 10

Deleting and creating sections and parameters, importing and exporting branches and sections, changing permissions, searching - the main functionality when editing the registry.
The editor has 2 active fields - Sections and Options.

The "Sections" field is aimed at full display and convenient work with branches and subsections. Using context menu you can search, add, delete, or rename a section, and export or open the security settings of the desired branch.

The "Parameters" field displays all the parameters of the current section with the possibility of editing them.

It should be remembered that before carrying out any manipulations, you should create a backup copy in order to avoid errors and failures. To do this, use the Export and Import section in the File tab.

Editing programs

The interface and functionality of regedit leaves much to be desired. Slow transitions between partitions, the lack of quick backups and transitions make the work very difficult. But all this has been improved in third party applications: Registar Registry Manager and Registry Workshop.

Registry Workshop

Long-awaited functionality Windows users, performed in full in the Registry Workshop application. Comparison of branches and sections, multi-window mode, bookmarks, color display and much more is done in this program.

Have a great day!

The registry is one of the important parts operating system Windows. In fact, the registry is a big reference book that stores a huge bunch of parameters. Over time, it becomes larger, and, unfortunately, begins to contain a lot of unnecessary information. In such circumstances, finding the necessary information becomes more difficult.

Changes to the registry should be treated with great care. Since the slightest mistake can cost you a lot of nerves that you will spend on repair and restoration. Therefore, remember the most important rule when editing the registry "If you do not understand what you are going to do, then it is better not to even try to do it". And if you are interested in cleaning the registry, then it is better to entrust this task to specialized programs, which you can find in the review Best free registry cleaners.

Overview of Free Windows Registry Editors

RegEdit standard Windows registry editor

The Windows operating system maintains its own registry editor. Finding it is very easy. Go to the Start menu and type regedit (if you have a specialized keyboard, you can first press the combination Windows + R, and then type regedit). This is one of the most simple editors registry, but it is developed by those who made the registry.

RegEdit has a fairly simple approach to organizing searches. In this sense, there is clearly a lack of opportunity to set conditions and restrictions. However, for a tiny tool that is accessible from anywhere in the system, this is quite enough.

This program will satisfy the needs of ordinary users who sometimes need to fix 1-2 keys.

Registar Registry Manager advanced registry editor

The first third-party product is . Free version limited in functionality, and at each start asks to buy it. However, it contains a good set of tools that are clearly larger than the standard RegEdit. The user interface is organized quite simply and clearly, although it looks a little old and strange. When working with it, it is important to remember that you should not close the tab with a cross, as it will close not only open tab but also the entire program. But, this shortcoming is easily covered by its capabilities. The search is carried out very quickly, which undoubtedly gives the program an advantage over analogues.

On the official website, you can find a warning that this program generally not intended for novice users. And be careful when you click on the link to start downloading - the link to the main version purchase page is very close.

RegAlyzer advanced registry editor RegEdit

. Another product from this class of programs. It is developed by Safer-Networking, which is mainly engaged in the development of an antivirus solution. Apparently the need to change the registry frequently contributed to the development of RegAlyzer. In fact, this program is an augmented RegEdit, however, what the authors themselves write about on their website. The most basic addition is the expansion of search capabilities, namely the ability to work with key parameter types and the ability to specify regular expressions in the search bar. In terms of speed, the program loses a little to its counterparts.

Note: The fact that the program is a by-product suggests that it may not take into account all the features of working with the registry. Therefore, if the reliability factor is very critical for you, then this fact should be taken into account. However, this does not mean at all that the product is made of poor quality.

Reg Organizer has a tool that allows you to work directly with registry data. This is the Registry Editor. It provides the user with great opportunities to perform various operations on the registry. These capabilities go far beyond those found in the standard Regedit registry editor.

With it, you can edit, create and delete keys, as well as parameters and their values. The editor allows you to export and import a specific key, a set of keys or the entire registry to a file, edit registry files (.reg) and work with selected values. Let's see how all this can be used in your work with the registry.

After opening the editor, a window will be available in which the tree of keys is displayed on the left side, and the list of parameters of the selected key is displayed on the right. The most convenient way to work with keys and parameters is through the context menu, although you can also use the regular menu located at the top of the window. Using the menu, you can create new keys and parameters, edit and delete existing ones, add the keys and parameters you are interested in to Favorites.

By placing the key in Favorites, it will be possible at any time while working with the Registry Editor to open this tab, select the element of interest and quickly jump to it in the Registry Editor. This feature allows you to speed up work with the registry and make moving between frequently used items more convenient.

The program has the ability to search the registry while working with the editor. This search allows you to search for information in the selected key that you are working with. When you select the option “Search” - “Search in this key”, the find and replace tool will open, in which the selected keys will be indicated as the search section.

After the search is over, you can return back to the registry editor by clicking the "Registry Editor" button in the tool selection panel on the left side of the main program window. You can also switch to the editor by simply double-clicking on any of the found keys in the list at the bottom of the window in the find and replace tool.

Of particular interest is the ability to export and import registry keys to a registry file. Registry files are text or binary format files that contain information about registry keys and settings. The data contained in such a file can be added to the registry (import), and based on the registry data, a registry file can be created (export).

You can export keys different ways. You can save the entire registry in a file. You can save a separately selected key. At the same time, the key, all its subkeys and parameters that are present both in the key itself and in its child keys are saved in the file. And you can export the selected key without subkeys. In this case, only the current key and its parameters will be exported.

You can export keys in one of two formats - "new", used in Windows XP and later versions, and "old", which was used in younger versions of the operating system. Windows systems. The choice of the format is made in the window for selecting the name of the exported file. The difference between the formats is in the encoding used. Older operating systems used ANSI encoding, new ones used Unicode.

An interesting feature of the program is that you can create a prefabricated registry file from different keys. To do this, select the "Add key ..." option in the menu and select the external file to which you want to add it. This is a unique feature not found in the standard Regedit editor.

The reverse operation to export is to import data into the registry from a registry file. And a unique operation - deleting data from the registry according to the data from the registry file. This feature will be of interest primarily to those users who have to import various registry keys and settings from registry files with the .reg extension. This function removes from the registry all the keys and parameters that are contained in the specified .reg file.

External registry files in .reg format can be opened in the editor for viewing and editing. Each such file will open in a separate editor tab, which will allow you to quickly switch between them. The interface for working with the registry file is almost identical to the interface for working with the registry itself: all the same commands for creating, deleting and editing keys and parameters are available. Viewing external files before importing them allows you to see what data will be added to the registry, which keys and parameters will be affected by the import procedure.
